How do I Start?

You need to keep a reflective journal throughout the Module and make time to

pause, record and reflect on a regular basis.

You may find it useful to return to some of the questions below in order to keep

the reflective process alive:

• What has taken place in my studio practice? Description of events,

experiences and processes you have been through.

• What has influenced and inspired me when working with this project?

• What ‘critical incidents’ should I focus on? Critical incidents are

experiences, which stand out as having had a big impact on your

approach and thinking.

• What have I learnt from these experiences? What new techniques, skills

and abilities have I acquired?

• What would I like to change and why?

What are the potential mistakes you can make in producing your Reflective

Journals?

• Too much description and not enough analysis or evidence of research.

• It reads like a personal diary, listing events that are not related to your

work.

• The final statement does not capture anything meaningful because you

have written it at the last minute.

• Only positive events are discussed.

• You use the reflective journal simply to complain about things that have

made you dissatisfied or angry without truly reflecting on why they came

about or what could be done to prevent such things in future.

When a problem is identified, you do not take ownership of the situation,

instead see the situation as someone else’s fault, not stemming from you.

• No detailed discussion about what you have learnt and how things could

be developed differently in the future.

What should the format be?

The following information must be displayed clearly on the cover and spine of

your Reflective Journal in at least 14 Point font, following the rules on fonts as

outlined below. Your essay must be printed on A4 sized paper and be held

properly in a robust ring binder and written in English: your name in English

characters; you can include your name in other characters such as Arabic or

Chinese script, but this must follow your name in English characters and not be a

substitute for it. Your level of study, whether you are a part-time or full-time

student, your programme, your pathway and the title of the Module for which you

are submitting the Reflective Journal, the name of your tutor(s) on the Module for

which the Reflective Journal is being submitted

The text in your Reflective Journal must be word processed and in a font of at

least 10 Point. Text must be black print on white or cream coloured paper.

You must not use difficult-to-read fonts with excessive serifs or decoration. For

example, Alba Super, Algerian, Amaze, Baby Kruffy, Frosty, Gothic, Milano LET,

Snap ITC or Vivaldi must not be used. Any font which mimics handwriting such

as Blackadder ITC, Freestyle, Palace Script or Park Avenue must not be used.

The most preferred fonts for use in your Reflective Journal are mono spaced and

sans serif fonts, notably Arial, Lucida Sans fonts, Tunga, Trebuchet or Verdana.

When referring to the work of other people, even if these are fellow students, you

must properly reference that work, as you would do in an essay. WSA use the

Harvard referencing system. Refer to the WSA Academic Integrity Handbook,#p#分页标题#e#

found on the WSA intranet site, for guidance on citations which covers text and

non textual items such as paintings, sculptures, textiles and websites.

What can and cannot be included

You are encouraged to emphasise your written points with drawings, painting,

photographs, print offs of digital images, light textile samples or light plant

samples not heavier than pressed flowers or of leaves smaller than the palm of

your hand. Such items must never make up more than a third of the total pages

of your Reflective Journal.

All illustrations, including samples, must always have a proper caption.

No inclusion is allowed to be larger than A4 when unfolded.

Individual inclusions must not weigh more than an A4 sheet of Overhead

Projector (OHP) acetate.

You must not include anything that might be hazardous to anyone handling your

Reflective Journal or that will stain their clothing or skin when handled. No sharp
