One of the most common decisions managers have to make is the Make-or-Buy decision. Managers must often decide whether to make a product / perform a service function inside the company or to buy it from a suppler / outsource it to a contractor. The following excerpts provide two examples of outsourcing that the Pfizer Company undertook since 2007:
(1) “Pfizer saved 4,000 of its managers 66,500 hours of work by enabling them to outsource their tedious, time-consuming tasks to companies in India. With the click of a mouse the managers go to a website called PfizerWorks to prepare online work orders for services such as Powerpoint slide preparation, spreadsheet preparation, or basic market research. The requests are sent overseas and completed by a services-outsourcing firm.”
(2) “Pfizer says it plans to outsource much more of its manufacturing to Asian countries, mainly India and China, to cut costs. The company is also planning to expand its R&D investment in China, India, Japan, and South Korea…[P]fizer opened a research center in Shanghai in 2005 and announced plans earlier this year to invest $300 million in R&D in South Korea over the next five years.”
Required:
Research and write about the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing for corporations in general. Clearly, companies see cost advantages to outsourcing, so your write-up should focus more on managerial, strategic, and competitive aspects of outsourcing.
Your write-up must be original and completely your own work. Copying exactly from the sources you used or from someone else’s write-up will result in zero credit for the assignment. We will check write-ups for plagiarism.
Format:
• Your write-up must be in paragraph format with sentences that logically follow from one another. Do not use bullet points in your write-up.
• Your write-up must not exceed 200 words (you can check for this under “Tools” and selecting “Work Count…” in Microsoft Word).
• Cite at least two sources (other than the ones cited below) that you used in preparing your write-up. The citations must be in footnote format just like the format of the citations below.
• Use 12-point font, 1-inch side margins, and double-spacing.

Submission:

• The advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing ought to be clear, well-stated, original, and interesting.
• You ought to justify the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing to the reader by providing persuasive and logical arguments.
• The write-up ought to have a logical structure and flow that clearly shows the development of ideas.
• The write-up ought to demonstrate a strong command of grammar and vocabulary use.
• The length limit and format requirements must be obeyed.
