In this week’s set reading, designer and author Mel Campbell writes about the appeal of handmade things and things that appear hand-crafted even when they’re made using new technology or mass-manufactured. She considers the idea that choosing hand-made things can be a critique of consumerism. She concedes that while the handmade can be a kind of luxury and “just another kind of consumerism”, that on the other hand “it’s good to support small sellers of handmade goods.” (2009, p.17)
Select an example of interior/ communication/ interface design, an applied illustration (packaging, magazine layout, etc), advertisement or animation that has a purposefully amateur, overtly hand-crafted, or hobby aesthetic. Write a short article of 200-250 words, explaining who the target demographic is for this design or media production and why you think this approach or aesthetic has been chosen to appeal to this group and at this time. Incorporate one relevant quote from Campbell’s article. The quote should be used to support your argument and must be grammatically integrated. You must use an in-text reference. As always, please follow the Swinburne Harvard style: see under `Assignment Brief' for the short guide or the Swinburne Library page for the complete guide.
The ability to integrate relevant quotes to support your argument is something you must demonstrate in your Issue Assignment. This task provides practice in that skill.
Consider the task as a piece of design journalism, as a coherent piece of analysis, opinion and comment about professional design that incorporates roughness, amateurism, technical ‘flaws’. Embed an image if possible. An extra mark will be awarded for coming up with a relevant and imaginative title for your short article which you will write in the subject box of your post.
