1. The topic of the article
The topic of the article is Brain Development and Early Learning. Before this essay discusses the main points of the article and summarises and analyses its contents, I would like to tell a short story. Here is the story.
More than one hundred years ago, there was a young mother who took her child to seek advice from one of the greatest scientist, Charles Darwin. She asked, “Sir, when should I begin to teach my child?” Darwin asked a question in reply, “How old is your Child?” The mother said with proud, “He is only two and a half years old.” Darwin replied regretfully, “Madam, you have already been late for two years and a half”.
In the modern time, it’s hard for us to judge whether the story really happened or not, but it indeed depicts a picture for us, that is how important the early leaning of infants and young children are, as well as the importance of brain development of them. It is true that there are a lot of studies which have already given us the explanations of brain development and early learning, with a large number of empirical data to support their viewpoints; however, the article goes one more step, it not only describes the current studies of early learning and brain development of infants and young children, but also demonstrates the influence on societal development and public policy. This is the main topic of the article. #p#分页标题#e#
2. The purpose and organizing construct of the article
The author’s opinion is demonstrated progressively. The author first introduces the merits of early brain development and how the early learning could help that kind of development. Then the author thought the earlier the brain is developed, the better and good qualities the infants and young children would get after they grow up. And this can make the society develop with a positive direction, also make the public policy get better implementation effects.
According to the writing purpose and the viewpoints of the author, the structure of the article could be divided into two main parts. The first part demonstrates that early brain development of infants and young children will influence them for a life time. The second part argue for that, for the infants and young children, earlier brain development would result in better effects, also a beneficial effect on societal development and public policy implementation.
3. The sources used in the article
The sources used in the article are mainly from the previous and current research. For the research on brain development, some data and research conclusions are used to support the author’s viewpoints, for example, we knew that 85% of human being’s intellect personality and skills are formed by age five (National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, 2000); neuroscience depicts why the brain development benefit people (Hart, B. & Risley, T., 1995), and basics of brain structure depicts how it works.
Repeated positive experience such as muscle skills, social skills, rich language environment, is critical for children’s brain development; that’s why families with different backgrounds get different achievement regarding to children’s early learning. Earlier experience focusing on brain development would benefit children’s future academic success. Based on the previous conclusion, the article concluded the methods which could be used in children’s early learning.
According to data from a research called Brain Growth and Public Investment, the article makes a further step to discuss why brain growth is beneficial for to public policy, and how it saves money for public investment, the evidence is also demonstrated, as well as the influencing factors.
