Abstract: In psychology, motivation refers to the mental process of stimulating a human motivation, that is, to make people maintain a positive state of excitement, through some kind of external or internal stimulus. Motivation in the principles of management is the process of stimulating people’s work motivation, arousing people’'s activity, and developing people’s potential through a variety of external or internal stimuli. It is the eternal theme and effective means of the human resource management and development as well as the key link of improving efficiency and benefits.
The monographic study of incentive by a Harvard University professor James shows that a person’s ability will be developed only at 20% -30% without the motivation. http://www.ukthesis.org/Thesis_Writing/ Then a person’s ability will be developed at 80% -90% with effective motivation. (Stephen P. Robbins, 2008) We can see that motivation is of great importance of human resource development. Motivating has increasingly become an indispensable method in human resource management, therefore, it is necessary for us to make an in-depth research and study of the effects of leadership and team building on the employees, to fully understand its importance and apply into practice.
I. Introduction
Effective management must be the full utilization of manpower, material resources and financial resources, and the degree of material and financial resource utilization ultimately depends on the people with relevant ability and enthusiasm in working. That is to say, if enterprises intend to obtain the best economic benefits, develop a variety of resources to the fullest, they must fully mobilize the enthusiasm of people and develop people’s initiative.
A leadership style, which lays great emphasis on motivation over demands and regulations, will be very effective with some excellent employees. It is essential for a company to organize and carry out talks and seminars for management, which will help the leaders in the company be more conscious of the effectiveness of positive leadership. (Drucker. P. F., 2007) It is suitable for a team. The team leaders provide more positive feedback, then members respond with more enthusiasm in work. It is not difficult to deduct that the result can be a mutually beneficial with a virtuous circle, which will contribute to more effective and more productive work.
II. The Role of Leadership and Team Building in Motivation
Motivation is an effective means to mobilize people, therefore, it has played an important role in the whole development of the organization. Leadership and team building also play an important role in motivating employees.
2.1 The role of leadership in Motivation
2.1.1 As a leader and organizer, he/she takes a leading role as a family member from the emotional
aspects.#p#分页标题#e#
Human beings have complex and abundant emotions, and emotional factors have great impact on people’s enthusiasm in working and creativity. A leader should regard the company as a family and employees as family members. Happy families are the same, which is to allow family members to have a sense of belonging and a sense of security, but also makes family members have a sense of responsibility and spirit of paying. The several factors are complementary to each other. Therefore, the boss of this “family” is parents, he shapes the family atmosphere with parents' mind and courage, molds the mass’s strength into a “fist”, plays out accurately and powerfully to produce endless stream of energy and struggle to achieve common goals. Also, they can form a marketing team and interact with subordinates’ family. Sometimes, subordinates can bring mood from the family to work, but also can bring mood in the work to the family, the two feelings interact and interfere with each other. If subordinate has a good mood, then, he/she can benefit the team and the family; but if once he/she has a bad mood, then the consequence is self-evident. I think many leaders and their families are subject to the “bad mood”. Our approach is through the interaction activities between our team and staff family, such as telephone communication, face-to-face communication, entertainment, etc. We further strengthen ties and close heart to heart relationship, understand each other's information, nip the “bad mood” in the bud, so that the two “families” can complement each other to achieve harmony and common prosperity (Drucker. P. F. ,2009a).
2.1.2 As a leader and organizer, he/she takes a leading role as a role model from his/her own activities, confidence, encouragement and support.
The power of role model is endless, which is praised highly of leader’s role of being an example in ancient time. Confucius said: managers with righteous behavior plays a role without commanding; managers with evil mind war unable to lead people even commanding. Managers’ behavior and actions are actually the object of imitation, and the silent command, which has illustrated the importance of the role model. Advice and suggestions from subordinates are of great importance to make the right decisions for the boss. Therefore, supervisors treat http://www.ukthesis.org/Thesis_Writing/ comments and suggestions from subordinates modestly, and respect their ideas and programs, which will create a mutual understanding, mutual trust, mutual support, mutual encouragement and positive atmosphere for the development. Leaders play three roles: backing, navigator and ladder, which can help them get a sense of stability and a sense of accomplishment, and there is no worry after carrying out the work. They can feel free to forge ahead, and then the difficulties will be solved. This has not only increased the prestige of leaders, the team's combat has also been strengthened. Therefore, employees will receive more motivation and inspiration from their leaders.#p#分页标题#e#
2.1.3. As a leader and organizer, he/she takes a leading role as a superior from the scientific use of praise and criticism.
Honor can meet people’s self-esteem to stimulate people’s morale and motivation. There is a humorous text message commented “the boss” and “manager”: “the boss is the one with a straight face, managers often are not unreasonable ones.” Actually, the behavior of the boss is unfeasible in the long run. Boss makes good use of praise and criticism, becomes praise and criticism a “tool”, supervise and promote the development of the subordinates, which beneficial rather than harmful for the subordinates’ development. Severity sometimes is a kind of deeper love, and criticism may be the greatest wealth; if a subordinate has no hope to cultivate, superiors are reluctant to spare the time and energy to criticize him. (Drucker. P. F., 2009b) But technical encouragement is also a very good way for spiritual motivation, it will inevitably enlarge the role many times. So leaders’ praise and criticism can contribute to employees’ enthusiasm in working, then they will create more wealth for the company.
2.1.4. The leader or organizer takes a leading role as an intimate friend from the scientific use of praise and criticism.
The leader can make use of subordinates’ anniversary to enhance the feelings of subordinates. Everyone has an anniversary which they attach great importance to, including birthdays, wedding anniversary, promotion and other important days, which is an good opportunity for the leader to promote relationships. At this time, the leader could further relations with subordinates by telephone, text messaging, email, QQ, party, gifts, etc. In fact, subordinates are not too concerned about material return by the leader, and what’s important is a spirit of comfort, so that subordinates feel respected, paid attention to and be concerned about.
2.2 The role of team building in Motivation
Team building refers to the formal group which is built by individuals’ mutual cooperation who intend to achieve a certain goal. It is a community which is formed by the employees and management layer, it is reasonable to use the knowledge and skills of every member to work together to solve problems and achieve common goals. Team building is concerning the activities which enterprises organize team in a planned and purposeful way in the management of an enterprise and train, summarize and enhance its team members.
2.2.1 Cohesion. What Sun Yat-sen and Mao Zedong, who have done some remarks, have in common is the ability to connect with the hearts of millions of people, this is a very unique ability. The purpose we follow a leader is to hope he can create an environment that combines the power of people to create a future! It is this cohesion that creating human history. Imagine that team members get away from you, or even because your words and deeds let them down and give up pursuit of the cause, will you succeed?#p#分页标题#e#
2.2.2 Cooperation. Sea is formed by numerous water droplets, and everyone is one of the drops in the team. Individuals cannot triumph over the team in the 21st century. Personal success is temporary, but the team's success is permanent. The success of a direct selling team depends on the collaboration and cooperation of each member in the team. Like playing basketball, even with high personal ability, he cannot win without the cooperation from his teammates. 5 people is a group when playing game, someone pitching, some rebounding, some foul tactically, however, the objective is to achieve team goals.
2.2.3 Organization without ourselves. The cause is a team cause, the collective cause, as the power of individuals is limited. Success is advanced by the team. Each member must understand the interests of the team and the team's goals are more important than personal interests and goals. If everyone in the team wants to take care of his own interests, the organization will collapse, the team will disappear and won’t achieve the goal. Since it is a team action, members should follow the arrangements of team leaders, then everything becomes very easy. The team’'s goal is to rely on the spirit of organization without ourselves.
2.2.4 Morale. A team without morale is a team lack of attraction, cohesion, combat and effectiveness. No matter under no circumstances or any difficulties we encountered, we are invincible. Tthe direct selling team should be a team filled with morale and raise their head to go ahead.
III. The Difference of Leadership and Team Building and Their Coexistence in Work
3.1 The Difference Between Leadership and Team Building
Team building has laid more emphasis on individual initiative, team is a community composed of staff and management layer. The community makes the rational use of the knowledge and skills of every member of the community to work together to solve problems and achieve common goals. Leadership emphasizes the commonality of people. Specific differences between the two are as follows:
3.1.1. From the leading role, groups should have a clear leader, and the leader has a determined role, however, team may not be the same, in particular, members of the team share the decision-making power at the mature stage of team development.
3.1.2. From the goals, the goals in the group must be consistent with the leader in the organization, but they can also generate their own goals in the team.
3.1.3. From the collaboration, the collaboration may be moderate and sometimes negative to some extent when leading, but there is kind of atmosphere that they make concerted efforts in the team.
3.1.4. From the responsibility, the leader in a group should bear a great responsibility, and in addition to the responsibility the team leader should take, every member of a team is also responsible for, or even interact and jointly bear the responsibility.#p#分页标题#e#
3.2 The Coexistence of leadership and team building
In today’s highly competitive market, leaders are generally aware of the company employees are the key factor to win. In order to mobilize the enthusiasm of employees engaged in work, many companies have thought out of good ideas, some focusing on material incentives, such as pay raise, improved benefits, etc. and some focusing on the spiritual aspects of incentives, such as providing training opportunities and democratic management atmosphere, etc,. The purpose is to increase employee’s enthusiasm, and enhance the awareness of dedication to the company. We analyze why some specific motivations have been successful, and some ended in failure through adopting two typical motivation case of high-tech companies.
Though the two principles have differences when working, they can work together, or even combine.
3.2.1 From the leading role, no matter for employees or team members, they have the same objectives to create more wealth and develop their own skills to the fullest when working. When a company carries out the leading role all the time, employees feel they have no right in decision, therefore, it is beneficial for the company to shit shift its management principles on some issues. They let employees participate in the activity and then the result may be unexpectedly good. So does in the team. When members in the team are unable to decide, they can elect for a deputy leader to make a proper decision, which has highlighted the role of leaders. (Harold Knootz,1993)
3.2.2 From the goals, it is unquestionable that they have the same goal. Even teama members generate their own ideas sometimes, they take the main role of the team as the key point, which can make them work together.
3.2.3 From the collaboration, no matter for leader or team leaders, they can adopt the employees’ of team members’ opinions to seek for a better development. As long as the leader or team leader handles their relationship well, the combination of the two principles will be of great benefit.
3.2.4 From the responsibility, the coexistence of the two principles can make employees or members have more awareness of taking responsibility, which will contribute to their carefulness in their work.
From the above, http://www.ukthesis.org/Thesis_Writing/ we can see that even there are some differences between the two principles, we can find the coexistence from their differences. As long as the leader or team leader handles the relationship with their employees or team members, the combination of the two principles will work better for a prosperous development.
