As an ancient Chinese saying goes, "Food is the paramount necessity of the people". It's clear that Chinese people attach great importance to eating, while snacks make up almost half of Chinese diet. It's no exaggeration to say that China is the paradise for "foodies".
Xiaochi
Different from western snacks, Chinese snacks actually refer to Xiochi, which literally mean small eats. They are not typically cooked in homes nor are they featured prominently on the menus of more formal restaurant. Instead, they are street food sold in night markets or small restaurants that specialize in a few or even just one xiaochi. As Taiwan is getting more and more affluent, xiaochi have become an important part of the culinary culture.
When it comes HK, it is another remarkable example that borrows the culinary essence of northern China and of the Western-style food. Hence it enjoys a worldwide reputation as the "kingdom of cuisine", where is filled with restaurants serving international cooking. It's indeed that HK has plentiful and cheap street food on offer, such as fried stuffed peppers, bowls fin, car noodles and so on.
Snacks and culture
Because snacks are highly local, in some cases, one city's markets or restaurants can become famous for a particular type of food. For instance, if a restaurant in Beijing specially sells Chengdu snacks, its name can be Chengdu Xiaochi in beijing. Here Chengdu is used as an identifier or an attribution of quality.
Furthermore, some snacks are usually considered as a sign for festivals, which tend to connote a symbolic meaning or a folk tale. For example, the moon cake on the Mid-autumn Festival signifies family reunion; on the Dragon Boat Festival, people eat zongzi to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan's death.
Last but not least, Chinese snacks relatively healthier compared with junk food such as potato chips, popcorn and other fast food which are characterized by high calorie and low nutrition value. Whereas most Chinese snacks contain a lot of carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables,

Chinese snacks are imposing with the richly history, wide varieties and distinctive flavors. With several thousand years of creating and accumulative efforts, they have become increasingly popular among more and more overseas gourmets, virtually functioning as an envoy of friendship in China's cultural exchanges with foreign countries.
