The assignment is to write two concert reports during the duration of this course. You may write a review of any classical concert happening in the Greater Victoria area. Monday Magazine and the Times- Colonist Go section have concert listings every Thursday and I've provided you a list of upcoming concerts elsewhere on Moodle. What I am looking for is a thoughtful review and personal analysis of one of the many concerts taking place in our community. Remember that while you are only required to write two reports, you are encouraged to attend as many concerts as possible! Please hand in your report as soon as possible after the concert has taken place. In any event, to keep it fresh, it must be handed in within one week after the concert has taken place. The minimum length should be 1200 words (four or five typed pages, double –spaced). Submissions must be made during class on paper. Help is available in essay writing from The Writing Centre (http://ltc.uvic.ca/servicesprograms/twc.php) i s located in Rooms 135K, L and M in the McPherson Library and I encourage all of my students to avail themse lves of this service. They will help you with the form, not the content, of your writing. The Centre is available to students at all levels of writing proficiency. The centre, offers students access to tutors from a wide range of disciplines, along with workshops on grammar, essay writing and other topics. It also provides increased support sp ecifically students whose first language is not English. Permission is needed from the instructor to use the service. I will be happy to sign the relevant form.
Why are we doing this? There are several good reasons for assigning this work. For one thin g, it is to encourage you to attend a live performance of classical music. You may not be familiar with the experience and it will help to develop your listening skills. While all of us have a reaction to music that we hear, it is often difficult to put ou r response exactly into words. This will give you a chance to articulate a response both to the music and the performance.
Guidelines: Before going to the concert, you should spend some time preparing for the event. The programs for a number of concerts are listed beforehand, so do your homework. You should do some advance listening or reading about the music that is to be performed (go to the library- the staff at Music and Media will be happy to assist you). Any essay requires an overall thesis or idea that should be presented in your opening paragraph. This report/review is no exception. Express a clear point of view to the reader immediately and reinforce it throughout the paper. Be sure to include information describing which concert you are discussi ng and a good title helps to clarify your intentions and facilitates the general focus of your work. You should both evaluate and describe your experience of the concert. Do not tell your reader merely what happened, but how you reacted to it as well.#p#分页标题#e#
Questions to ponder:
1. Did the concert progress in mood or was it a collection of pieces? Were some pieces lighter of darker than others? How did you feel when you left the concert? Why? 2. What were the instrumental of vocal forces that you heard? What s ort of effect did they produce? Did some musical sounds appeal to you more than others? Why? 3. Was the music of different periods or was it written about the same time? Did that have an effect on your perception? Did the different pieces have a great deal of variety or similarity? Did that make the program fragmented or lend it cohesion? 4. Notice the musicians- what did you notice during their performance? Did the music look easy or difficult to perform? If there were a number of musicians, how did they s tay together? Did they watch each other a great deal or do you think they just responded as a result of good listening? 5. How does the experience of attending a live performance differ from listening to your stereo at home? Do the visual elements and the immediacy of the performer’s presence change the way you listen? These are just some of the questions to ask yourself before, during and after each concert you attend. You may wish to address a number of these ideas (or any of your own) in your essay. It i s valuable to realize that each concert raises a different set of issues.

Grading: The evaluation of your work will be based on written evidence that you have listened attentively and reflected thoughtfully on your experience. If you feel a certain way, try to discern why you feel that way. What specific features in the music itself and/or the performance account for your reaction? Use your new vocabulary: use forte and lento, not loud and slow, for example. When your report is finished, s pend some time editing it. Make sure that your sentence structure is clear, your grammar correct and your spelling perfect.
This is the formula that we are using to evaluate you reviews:
Introductory Description (including presence of a thesis) and Conclusion The introductory description should present your topic clearly and state what you are attempting to prove. Your conclusion should summarize main arguments, review the points made in the paper in a general way, and restate your thesis. 20%
St ructure and Relevance The material in the review should be coherently presented and progress logically to support your thesis. Each point should clearly relate to your central argument. Paragraphs should be neither too short nor too long. 20%
Content You should adequately describe your feelings regarding the quality of pieces and the quality of the performance. You should exhibit a general awareness of the forces that went into the preparation and production of the concert. You should have done some research to prepare yourself for a sufficient understanding of the individual composition and the composer. That research should be reflected in your footnotes and in your bibliography. 40% #p#分页标题#e#
Style This covers sentence structure, grammar, spelling, general level of expression and eloquence, punctuation and the use of musical vocabulary. 15%
Mechanics There should be a title page, correctly formatted footnotes and a bibliography. 5%
