1 Executive summary
This report analyses and identifies some of the knowledge management issues faced by the Archetype. Then based on the problem analysis, a “content-based” knowledge management system is proposed to address these issues.

The first section of the report shows an annotated version of the rich pictures which reflects three main knowledge management issues, and then a brief description on the goals of knowledge management is raised based on these issues. Finally an updated human activity model is presented to illustrate a ideal situation.

The second section presents a proposed knowledge management system. The first part of this section shows detail description of the new proposed knowledge management in terms of four key elements. The second part presents a way to evaluation the success of proposed system. Finally, BPMN on the new proposed business process is shown to reflect how it works with current practice.

2 The goals of the intervention
2.1 Background
Archetype is a 25 years architectural design company specializing in heritage projects. They usually consult external experts and cooperate with other engineering firms to produce excellent architectural deliverables. It has been invited to provide services for international projects, such as UK and Singapore, and considered expanding business to overseas markets, such as China.

2.2 Annotated rich picture
According to the annotated rich picture (Figure 1), obvious problems associated with knowledge management is the inefficient sharing of knowledge including documents and experience in details as follow.

In terms of explicit knowledge (documents), there are two crucial problems shown by the rich picture. First, staffs such as junior architect think documents are useless. Second, it is difficult to reuse documents, even though similar projects can provide similar solutions codified in documents which can be searched.

In terms of tacit knowledge (experience and skills), one important problem is lack of efficient channel to share experience and skills between staffs such as junior architect and partner.#p#分页标题#e#

Based on the above analysis, three goals of the intervention in terms of KM are as follows:
1. Bring codified knowledge together and make them available across the organization in a useful way.
2. Improve the reuse of existing knowledge.
3. Shorten the experience and skill gap between people from different levels.
