But as far as we can see from the materials we grasp, their research is not very comprehensive, so this paper carries on the analysis to the character of David on the basis of the former research, through the compare of his dual personality, and expand to the readers a new David. David Copperfield was written by the 19th century British famous critical realist writer--Charles Dickens, and David is a very famous image in the literature world, this novel tells the story of David from his childhood to his old age, his life experience, using a series of writing technique and romantic fairy tale color, the novel is rich of varieties of environment description and the deep description of the character truly represented the 19th century, depicting the capitalist vanity, disclose the ordinary people's hard life, deeply revealed the capitalists' greed, vicious heart, strongly condemned the capitalist's oppression to the poor and the disadvantages of capitalism. 
 
Now, people all over the world have an increasing attention to the spirit culture and so far the domestic and foreign scholars have had further research and exploration on the works of Charles Dickens, and have made great achievements. This paper tries to have more deep study on his works on the basis of the former study, to explore the innovation, the thorough analysis of the character of the hero's advantages and disadvantages, so as to help readers  have more understanding to the19th society environment.
 
David Copperfield has strong autobiography nature, is the most favorite  novel of Charles Dickens. David Copperfield's life experience was almost the reflection of the real life of Dickens. Through the description of David Copperfield, showing David’s attitude towards life and his thought, vividly showed the 19th century of British realism period. Charles Dickens was one of the greatest representatives of English critical realism in the 19th century who was born in 1812 at Portsmouth. When he was very young, his family moved to Chatham, and the five years he spent there were the happiest of all his boyhood. One day, he found a pile of English novels, which aroused his curiosity and from then on he was deeply attracted by the literature world. In 1821, his family moved to a very poor place in London, at that time his father was deep in debt, and he can not afford to pay money back, so he was put into prison, so does Charles Dickens. When he was twelve, he was sent to a factory, where he must work from eight in the morning and end at eight in the evening, his life condition in the factory was very miserable, and this experience has a very strong impression in his later life and his thought, which had a deep influence in his later novel creating.
 
Charles Dickens, as a very famous writer in the 19th century in England Victorian Age, has created many famous works all of his life, such as David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Hard Time, Oliver Twist, etc. 
 
Among most of his works, we can see that Charles Dickens exposed and criticized all social poverty and social injustice, hypocrisy,corruptness he saw around him. In his novel, he expanded a very realistic picture of the English bourgeois society of his life time to the readers. His works almost tells a lot of his childhood experience and most of his works have a very beautiful ending, so we can see that he is humorous and optimistic. His works also nuanced psychological analysis, while the main feature is his use of critical realism. He is one of the most famous representative of 19th critical realism, and most of his works are set in realistic environment and his characters represented all walks of life, from beggars, criminals and orphans to factory owners. This critically realistic description of Victorian working class life is perhaps the very essence which makes Dickens become one of the greatest authors of his time, his works showed a deep sympathy to the lower-class in his time.
 
1.2 David Copperfield
 
David Copperfield, written by Charles Dickens, was his eighth novel and the novel was his favourite novel, which was called"the favourite child in my heart" by Charles Dickens, the novel was popular with many people in the world.
 
Chapter 2 The Characteristics of Young David Copperfield年轻的大卫·科波菲尔的特点
 
2.1 The Positive Character：Sincerity，Slipperiness
 
After reading this novel, we can clearly see that young David is sincere and slippery. From the time that David had met his aunt, David’s aunt engendered her determination to help David leave the dreadful factory of his step-father, and helped him to take education , from then on, David has turned a new leaf to his later life. David’s aunt, Betsey Trotwood, a woman of feistiness and wisdom,  who was one of the most strong-minded and most independent-minded of all Dickens’ fictional women characters, that had played a very important part in the development of David. Young David believed in his aunt very much, so he was willing to obey her and listen to her advice. What kind of person that David would be depended much on his own will, while his aunt also played a great important part in his character. His aunt told him“never be mean in anything, never be false, and never be cruel. Avoid those three vices, and I can always be hopeful of you"(Charles Dickens, 2007:15). So his sincerity was his commission to his aunt. When David facing Uriah Heep, the man who always claimed to be a humble man, David was totally at a loss what he should to do with him. David said“I felt embarrassed by these compliments came from them"(Charles Dickens, 2007:19) and “they( Heep and his mother ) just did what they liked with me and wormed things out of me, what I had no desire to tell”(2007,19). When David gradually grew up , he learned some cleverness in dealing with the constantly changing world. David had his new profession, a decent job in Doctor’s Commons with the help from his aunt. David’s aunt spent one thousand pound in doing this deal. Through this transaction, David began to realize the power of money and the nature of the relations between members of the society. In Doctors’ Commons, Mr. Spenlow told David some secret truth of his profession, that it was“the genteel and most profitable profession in the world”(Charles Dickens, 2007:23). But David did not have the hardihood to suggest him that they possibly might even improve the world a little, because he did not want to lose his “gentlemanly character”. Some changes has inevitably taken place in David’s mind. It should be noticed that at that time he even had some lurking distrust of Steerforth, although he wrote to him most affectionately in replying to his letters as always. What we have to admit was that it was really a different David, one can pretend and be very smooth and slick in establishing social relations with others. What is more important, when he met Mr. Micauber again, he told Tradle, one of his old classmates not to lend Mr. Micauber anything. While David’s slipperiness was not a sickening and disgusting characteristic because his slipperiness was different from Uriah Heep’s slipperiness and what he did did not mean any harm to others.
 
2.2 The Negative Character: Imaturity, Self-distrust
 
As we know about this novel gradually deep, we can see that David has dual personality. David had a desire to apply himself to some pursuit that would not lie too heavily on his aunt and do his own duty, but in fact, the too comfortable life had tortured his determination. In this period, David Copperfield was so conservative that he had not much passion to his life. In his own words, he lacked firmness , he was immature yet. He could not find a right person that he could rely on, thus life to him was empty. He threw himself into the ridiculous life, smoking and drinking, at the same time he regretted for that when he met Agnes, his “good angel”, he remembered of his purity of the earlier days and shed tears. Later on, David had his object, Dora, and soon he lost his heart to her. Charles Dickens used a long passage to describe David’s love with Dora and we can infer that his love to Dora was really true but it was not reasonable in fact. Dora was just like a fairy from the heaven, she was destined not to get along with David very well. As a result, their marriage was not a happy one, the frictions in daily life between them forced David to reconsider their love. He admitted that his own heart was undisciplined when it first loved Dora, he wished that his wife could be his counselor, the one who can had more character or purpose to sustain him and help him improve, the one who had been endowed with power to fill up the void of him. Apparently Dora was not his right girl. Actually in his marriage, he showed his blindness, while the blindness in his love, in some way, showed the immaturity of young David.#p#分页标题#e#
 
David said“a distrust of myself has often beset me in life on small occasions”(Charles Dickens, 2007:38), in the inner world of his heart, David was self-contemptuous, not only because of his family background but for his unsuccessful career, his profession lied heavily on his aunt’s help, it should not be denied that David had a strong-willed aunt, but the fact was that his aunt could not give him help in his self-confidence. Therefore David had not felt happy though he had got a decent job and became a gentleman, in addition to, in the process of pursuit of Dora, especially after his aunt told him about her bankruptcy, David showed his self-distrust, because he was not sure whether Dora would love a poor David. But what was important was that he should have known that only by his own efforts can he succeed and get his confidence and won the love of Dora. Besides, Steerforth was another character who had a great influence on David’s self-distrust, David said“I was rather bashful at first, Steerforth is so self-possessed and elegant and superior to me in all respects”(Charles Dickens, 2007:40), at school, David was always protected by Steerforth and Steerforth seemed wiser than any other student in school. Steerforth had all the good qualities that David did not possess, such as courage, wisdom, intelligence and elegance. Comparing with his idol, David was sure to feel self-distrust, when he was a child, Steerforth might be a person who bringing David hope. However, it became a gloomy shadow to David when he grew up.
 
All in all, young David Copperfield was identified with the most complex characteristics in all of his life. He was ambitious to be a distinguished man, but the life experience could not give him sufficient confidence or courage，he wished to treat others sincerely but sometimes he showed his slipperiness，he had the desire to rely on himself but he was unwilling to abandon the comfortable life. It is a critical period for David Copperfield. 
 
Chapter 3 The Characteristics of Adult David Copperfield大卫·科波菲尔的特点
 
3.1 The Positive Character: Self-reliance, Generosity, Stability, Maturity
 
David and his aunt seldom met with each other, but when they met again this time, his aunt brought a bad news to him:“I am bankrupt”(Charles Dickens, 2007:35), David was shocked by what he heard from his aunt. When his aunt was still a composed frame in his mind, David was really crushed by some frustrated feelings, because his aunt was the pillar in David’s life. Her bankruptcy meant that he lost the main support and thereafter he had to rely on himself, he had to say goodbye to his yesterday. Yet, his clever and strong aunt encouraged him:“we must meet reverses boldly and not to frighten us”(Charles,Dickens, 2007:35). 
 
At this time David realized that“what I had to do was, to turn the painful discipline of my earlier days to account, by going to work with a resolute and steady heart”(2007:36), “I had infinite satisfaction in being so closely engaged and never walked slowly on any account”(2007:36), in this period we cannot neglect that Dora played an important role in the altered character of David, because Dora was his object, he felt enthusiastically that “the more I tired myself, the more I was doing to deserve Dora”(2007:36), Dora was the direct motivation for David to change his own life. In this process, Mr. Dick also set a good example to David. In Chapter 36, there is a piece of description about Mr. Dick: “he is going about to change this treasure into sixpences, bringing to my aunt arranged in the form of a heart upon a waiter, with tears of joy in his eyes”(2007:36) and he “thought my aunt the most wonderful woman in existence and me the most wonderful young man”(2007:36). Mr. Dick was one of David's best friends, his perseverance and confidence surely encouraged David. The love with Dora forced David to work pretty hard, and busily keep red-hot all the irons he had now on the fire. He himself felt his resolution. David made a series of achievements and finally won the heart of Dora，he had done all by himself，David was not a weak and timid child any more，he had become a strong man, Mr. Wickfield’s death did not defeat him and he comforted Dora’s hurt soul and won her love at last with his perseverance and resolution, even when Dora died, David was not despaired because he had acquired the capability of living, he could rely on himself rather than others. Steerforth, was ever the best friend of David in his childhood, who helped little David a lot in his childhood, at last was proved to be a bad man when he induced Little Emily to run away with him. He betrayed David and hurt his innocent friend’s sincere friendship to him. At some time, David hated Steerforth very much because he broke a happy family and offended and humiliated the kindness of the Pegottys, who were David’s most respectable friends, but David thought more about his good qualities, he tried to find a best excuse for Steerforth’s wrong deed. Mr. Pegotty’s attitude toward Emily affected David, although Emily hurt his heart deeply, Mr. Pegotty was still generous to her, he said “if all hurts should come to me, remember that the last words I left for her was: my unchanged love is with my darling child and I forgive her”(Charles Dickens,2007:45). At the same time, Ham was also a great and generous man, he cost his life to save Steerforth who stole his girl. At last, David forgave his old friend, and brought him back to his home and consoled his poor mother, David’s manner was earnest and the tears in his eyes were the best testimony for his generosity to his best friend.
 
As is mentioned in the novel , David and his child wife did not get along very well with each other. Dora knew nothing about the practical life and she could not help David in his writing, that was why David wished to change Dora a little, but at last, he gave up his plan, he realized that Dora’s mind was already formed, he decided to be satisfied with his child wife and try to change her into nothing by any progress, he was tired of being sagacious and prudent, he was willing to give Dora much more freedom and happiness, although their marriage was not a perfect one, because the disparity between their mind, they do not have much in common. But we see a generous David who tolerated lovely Dora and try his best to give her all happy days as much as he could. Reading there, the generosity of David Copperfield should be respected by the readers.
 
Through so much difficulties and troubles in his life, David had become more and more steady in his steps in his adulthood, and we can see, in his profession, his love and his friendship, and his life, David have all found his best answers. He lived his life with his stability and maturity of his mind, regarding his profession, David went on along a right road, he took to the literature work and had fun in doing his career, David felt more and more confident through the success of his career, David knew that his child dream came true after his many years’ hard work.
 
3.2 The Negative Character: Tenderness, Self-center, Selfishness, Dependence
 
After his child wife Dora died, David decided to give his most sincere love to Agnes--his good angel, however, he was hesitant to tell Agnes his love to her, in his love to Agnes, he exposed his tenderness, he dared not to tell her that he love him, because he knew what the three words meant, and he did not want to hurt Agnes, he thought “it was for me to guard this sisterly affection with religious care"(Charles Dickens,2007:46). And for David, Agnes was no doubt that his best choice for marriage, Agnes was the right motivation on his way, she was the source of every worthy aspiration, the center of his life and the right person he founded his love on a rock, she was the one who could really help him in his life. For all the efforts David took, he deserved the love of Agnes. With Agnes’love and guide, David would make his life better and became more mature and steady in his life.#p#分页标题#e#
 
On the other hand, through reading this novel, we can know, it was just David who brought unfortune to the Pegoty, because David like Mr. Steeforth very much, while in fact he did not know very much about the adult Steerforth, all he knew about Steerforth was just his childhood memory, who helped him in his very young age. So when he felt some strange thoughts from his friend , Mr Steerforth, and felt that Steerforth had some love affairs about Emily, he just overlooked, he did not want to know and even when Agnes gave him some hints about Mr. Steerforth, he refused the hint about “bad angel” from Agnes, he turned a deaf ear to the Pegoties, he chose to know nothing and said nothing, fully performed his indifference. At last, his wrong deed led to this family suffered from the later sufferings. Reading from here, we had to admit that David was selfish, he did not care his best friends, his dual personality was very obvious.
 
At the same time, although David has showed great generosity to his child wife, in some way, he also showed his selfishness to his child wife. When he married Dora, at first, he wished that Dora could be his useful wife, who could help him in his work and help him grow, not only in daily life. When he found that he could not get help from his child wife, he wanted to change Dora, however, when he found his wish could not be true, Dora was just a baby wife，who indeed needed his help rather than help him, he felt so crazy about this truth that he must carry on some burden which belonged to Dora, he even puzzled about his choice and his marriage, in this plot, David clearly showed his selfishness.
 
As well as, David was self-reliance, in some way, he also had the habit of relying on others. When he thought his work was so miserable and he could not put up with it anymore, he chose to run away, and he decided to seek help from his aunt, the aunt he never met in his earlier life, of course, he was fortunate to find his aunt and his aunt would like to adopt him. From here, we clearly saw his dependence.

At that era, under the impact of free trade, money rules dominated society. Copperfield 's difficulty was because of Mr. Muderstone, Uriah Heep and he ascribed to his poverty that caused his difficulty. From the hustle and bustle of London to a secluded village, desolate beach, almost everywhere was filled with the worship of money, egoistic fumes, it choked the life of people, even children. And the British children's education had become a bourgeois business object, after the bankruptcy of small wine material manufacturer Kerrey Gul, Lauren started school, but which was operated in another deal, what he cared about was only how to use a low tuition fees of debts to seek more profits from more students. 4.3 Three Important Women: Pegotty, Betty Aunt, Agnes
 
There are three important women in David's life, who had played an important part in his process of growing up. We have to admit that in some aspects, Betty aunt and Mr. Muderstone had something in common, but in fact they had different nature. David's aunt Bessie had a queer temper, she was very sensitive to the donkey, when the donkey was going from the front lawn of her house, she was the most angry person. Her personal independence, dare to do, regardless of the secular vision, a male temperament, were all reasonable, while aunt Bessie had her love, kindness, mercy, and she was soft-hearted, heavy affection. Although she hated boy, but when David went to seek her help, and she adopted him, and gave David education. She put Mr. and Miss Muderstone away with great eloquence. She also cared others, educated them, so that they could learn how to protect themselves, she was so fond of Dora, but she did not dote her, and gave Dora the name:"cute flowers". Aunt Bessie told her husband that she still did not forget what he had done to her. Even if he abandoned her and found another, however, when his husband become into a penniless wandering people, as long as he came to aunt Bessie for borrowing money, she would give him, although because of his threat, but it also showed that his aunt Bessie was heavy on affection. In David's impression, aunt Bessie was a very intelligent, competent woman, she knew a lot of commercial activities. When she went bankrupt, concealed the two thousand property, she did it on purpose, just for exercise David and let him learn to adapt to the difficulties in life, and learned to overcome difficulties, so he could undertake the responsibilities of life. Agnes was the one that David liked best, no matter from her appearance, character or her knowledge and thought, she was almost impeccable. Agnes is beautiful, dignified, generous, gentle, quiet and steady, thoughtful who have a keen insight, strong character and will, a tolerant heart, she was David's spirit, beautiful angel. Anyone who can have such a good friend would be more proud. Agnes was her father's housekeeper and spiritual consolation, because of her love for her father, she was premature, and took care of the responsibility of his father, for her father she had to please the Heep scumbag, but she would never yield to Uriah Heep, and won't let Heep sinister purpose come true. Agnes, although had not excessive contact with Steerforth, but she could judge him clearly from a trivial thing, that he was David's side risk, her insight was sharp, compared with David's emotional worship to Steerforth , Agnes was rational. Her love on David was deep and long, she has been silently in love with David, but David was unresponsive, and his pursuit of love was blind. After Dora died, after experienced many difficulties, after several years of overseas experience, David finally understood his love to Agnes, at last they got married, their love was founded on the rock, blind love was not lasting, steady love was be secure against assault. In terms of career and life, Agnes was David ideal partner.
 
David's old nurse, Pegotty, she was also a great woman. Little David was in her care and accompany that he could grow up happily, and adult David still got her meticulous care. Pegotty's love to David kept faithful and true, she was not a servant but a relative, even her love to him were more stronger than his mother, after David was punished by his stepfather, little David was covered all over with cuts and bruises, locked in a room, the mother could not bear to see him, only Pegotty followed the keyhole to comfort him. No matter where and when, she always took care of David very well, her home was always David position, she told David that love is sincere, honest, she is kind-hearted, she is honest people, she is also very capable.

David Copperfield was written in a capitalist social environment. After reading this book, you may find that the author might describe the hero as himself. It is just like a autobiography of the writer himself. There existed the same experience and feelings. David was very humble and sacrificed his love for Agnes in favor of a sibling-like relationship with her. Through reading this novel, we can know that David dared to challenge the unfair destiny that he was faced up with. He did his utmost to overcome his obstacle. This is what we need to learn from. To some degree, David showed his bravery and aggressive behaviors. The orphan Copperfield suffered many hardships, tasted the bitterness in his life, through the hard struggle, finally he got career success and family happiness. Through the above chapters of analysis of the characteristics of David Copperfield and the reasons why he would have such character, a conclusion has be drawn here. David had a dual personalty. Although there are a lot of merits in his character, there are also some shortcomings in his character, David was born in a singled-parent family, he became an orphan at very young age, and when he was a child, his stepfather often punished him, his mother was too weak to protect little David, as a result, there are some characters of David was affected heavily by his weak mother. His step-father treated him badly and David’s childhood was really a nightmare, also affected his character. When his mother died, he was forced to leave school and became a factory boy, it was too bad, yet it was lucky for David to have Pegotty who sincerely loved him and helped him. Child David was innocent and kind-hearted, the runaway from Murdestone's factory marked the end of David’s childhood. From then on, David was already a young man, in this period, he was on the way to be a man and began to get a further understanding of the life meaning. The characteristics of young David were really something complex, there were both positive and negative sides in his characteristics, such as sincerity, slipperiness, immaturity and self-distrust etc. With the help from his aunt Betty, David finally got a decent profession and knew much worldly knowledge in association with Mr. Spenlow. The love with Dora showed his immaturity and all of his youthful period could be defined as an immature one.
