At the end of the semester, you will turn in a persuasive 5-paragraph essay.  We will work on this essay for the rest of the semester.  You must choose a topic and develop a thesis statement that you will develop into your essay.  It is very important to choose a topic that you will enjoy researching and writing about during the rest of the semester.

Your final topic and thesis statement is due before Week 11, http://www.51fabiao.org/yglw/Class 2.  You can enter your topic and thesis on your class website in the “Topic and Thesis” discussion. After you submit your topic, I will approve or deny your topic.

I will only allow one person in the class to write a certain thesis.  No two students will have the same thesis, so make sure to enter your topic and thesis as soon as possible.  After your final topic is chosen, you cannot change it.  You may modify your thesis if you communicate with me.

You must write your essay using your approved topic and thesis.  If you turn in an essay with a different topic or thesis, you will receive a 0 on your final essay.

Before choosing a topic, make sure you read and understand the packet of information about topic selection and thesis statements.  Your topic and thesis should not be too broad, too narrow, or contain more than 1 idea.  It should be appropriate for a 5-paragraph essay.  You are not writing a paragraph or a book.

You should make sure you can find some English-language research about your topic.  Read the “Research Guidelines” document online.

This is your chance to be creative, to express yourself, to share your ideas, and to use freedom of speech.

Your topic can be serious.  It can be related to society, government, university and other serious areas.

Your topic can be light-hearted and fun.  You can choose a topic like the topics we used for the persuasive paragraph.

Your topic can be controversial.  You can offend people and write about “dangerous” things.  Remember, Mr. Kienzle does not care if he agrees with you or not.  Mr. Kienzle will grade your paper based on your format, grammar, sentences, argument, persuasion, research, and the other English writing elements we study in the course.

Off-Limit Topics

Topics and thesis statements should be creative.  Remember, you cannot persuade an audience if they already agree with you.  You should not write about topics that everyone knows about.

You can NOT choose the following topics unless you have a very creative approach or want to be the devil’s advocate.  Mr. Kienzle can approve or deny any topic even if it is not on this list.
