Introduction
The individual project is a piece of substantial work, carried out independently, supervised by a member of staff. It is intended for students to demonstrate integrated skills and knowledge developed in previous and coincident modules.

Aims and objectives of the module
This module aims to provide students with experience of the type of project work commonly encountered in industry. And through this the opportunity to implement project management skills acquired through other modules.
On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate that they:

have had experience in approaching an engineering problem in a systematic and rigorous manner;

Above all, the project is carried out independently. Although each student will have the support of a supervisor, and maybe the support of laboratory technicians and research students, it is the responsibility of each student to establish their own objectives and structure their own time.
What’s in a project?
There are many different sorts of projects, including laboratory experiments, computer modeling, software writing; design and manufacturing, etc. The supervisor usually sets aims and objectives which the student can then pursue by themselves, with the support of the supervisor and other staff. The supervisor and student meet weekly to assess progress.
The project is carried out independently. Students are expected to demonstrate that they can plan, structure and execute their own activity. That means that it is each student’s responsibility to identify what needs to be done and, with the support of their supervisor, get on and do it. Consequently, the School will not be doing this structuring for you. The School will, however, give you instruction on how to do this through MECH3800 Professional Studies
Each student should expect to spend around 300 hours of their time on this module. Expect therefore to spend at least 1½ days a week on your project during term time.
Apart from the introduction talk, there is one other lecture, just before the Easter break to provide guidance on writing the final report, the level 3 project show and the viva (exam).
There is also a session on the Wednesday afternoon of week 2 where the staff will briefly describe their projects to you to help you decide which project to choose.
Student learning is assessed through a substantial final report (up to 10,000 words), a poster presentation and an interview with an examiner, the viva. An interim report on your progress up to Christmas is assessed as part of MECH 3800.
