WHAT IS LEARNONLINE (MOODLE)?
LearnOnline (Moodle) is a collection of web course tools that facilitate teaching and learning on the Internet. From the end of 2008 and on Moodle is being used by the University of Canberra as the LearnOnline platform to enhance learning in its units, including those delivered off-campus.#p#分页标题#e#
The purpose of this document is to assist you in the early stages of using LearnOnline (Moodle), particularly when you are setting up your computer and accessing the online version of your unit for the first time.
It is designed to help you to:
access the online component of your unit offered by the University of Canberra, and
locate resources and support while using LearnOnline (Moodle).
It will also provide you with:
answers to frequently answered questions about LearnOnline (Moodle) and
some guidelines about how to best use Moodle‘s communication features.
WHEN CAN I USE LEARNONLINE (MOODLE)?
You can use LearnOnline (Moodle) if you are formally enrolled in a unit that has a LearnOnline site, and the site has been activated by your lecturer (normally only during teaching weeks).
LEARNONLINE, MOODLE AND OSIS – HOW DO THESE FIT TOGETHER?
LearnOnline is the University of Canberra‘s online learning environment. It provides access to learning resources and facilitates communication between the lecturer, tutors and students within a unit. It is available for most, but not all, units at the University.
Moodle is the current software platform for LearnOnline. http://learnonline.canberra.edu.au
OSIS is the Online Student Information System and it allows students to view their personal information stored on the University's Student Records System (including enrolment details) and it gives them access to their student email account. To log on to OSIS go to:
https://guard.canberra.edu.au/osis/real_logon.cfm or go to: http://www.canberra.edu.au then click For Current Students link, followed by the Log on to OSIS link.
WHAT CAN MOODLE BE USED FOR?
Moodle is a very flexible, and we think, a fairly intuitive system; and while most Moodle course sites share a similar look and feel, they may not necessarily use the same Moodle features. These features vary with the discipline, the unit level, your lecturer‘s choices, and the design adopted; but all units should contain a unit outline.
These features may allow you to:
access unit contents
communicate with your lecturer, tutor and other students enrolled in the unit by email, discussion and chat
complete online quizzes and self-assessment activities
submit assignments
prepare individual and group online presentations using a wiki

set a profile, and see who is in your unit and a bit about them in their profile areas
conduct searches and use glossaries, and
view scheduled events using a unit calendar or upcoming events block
Do not feel alarmed if all these features are not used in your online materials; your lecturer may not be using those tools in the unit‘s site.
MOODLE TERMS
Assignments—This is a tool in Moodle allowing students to submit written assignments in a digital format, a dropbox. If available, all assignments can be accessed through the Outline block: Assignment or the Activities block: Assignment. Individual assignments may be linked directly in a topic area.#p#分页标题#e#
Block—A block is an area of the Moodle screen that has been set up by your lecturer in the left and/or right sides of the main screen. Commonly used blocks may include Administration, People, Recent Activity, Upcoming Events, Calendar and Course Menu.
Chat—Chat is a way to interact with other participants in real time. All participants must be online at the same time. Chat text may be archived and available to be read at a later date.
Forum—A discussion forum is where you can participate in threaded discussions with your tutor and/or other participants around course-specific topics. Individual discussion forums can be reached through individual weeks or topics and all forums can be reached through the Outline block: Forums.
Wiki—Some units will include a wiki (a collaborative webpage), which allows participants to collaborate on writing by each person in the group writing and editing in a single online document.
ACCESSING YOUR MOODLE SITE
It is assumed that you already have a connection to the Internet via your choice of ISP (Internet Service Provider, e.g. Telstra Bigpond, Ozemail, Optus, etc.) and have some experience in the use of a computer and the Internet. If you are a face to face student, computer access is available on campus in building 10, the library and other venues depending on your area of study.
You can log on at http://learnonline.canberra.edu.au/ but you might want to check the requirements that at the Appendix at the end of this document if you have trouble with your computer or browser.
LOGGING ONTO MOODLE
Logging on to Moodle is simple. Go to http://learnonline.canberra.edu.au/ or choose this from the university staff or student home page. (Bookmarking this will save typing and time when you revisit the site.)
When it opens, you will find the
logon screen.

This login page contains the log-in area as well as links to Student and Staff Support, and current
important announcements. Once you are logged on to myMoodle, you can access any of your sites
without re-entering your Username or Password.
Enter your Username and Password. Remember these are case sensitive. Type in your username
and password exactly as they were given to you.
Your Username will be u1234567 (where 1234567 is your student ID). Ensure that you
place a small (lower case) u before your student ID.
Your Password will be the same as you use to access OSIS, the email and Internet
access at the University of Canberra.
Your password can be obtained by contacting the Service desk on +61 (0)2 6201 5500 or email
[email protected]. Some offshore students may obtain their passwords from the overseas
program liaison officer.
HOW DO I NAVIGATE WITHIN LEARNONLINE (MOODLE)?
Moodle offers a range of methods to help you find your way around.#p#分页标题#e#
Breadcrumbs: Underneath the blue area in the top left of the screen, you will see a trail of links
(breadcrumbs) that tracks your path to the current location. You can click on any of these links to
return to that screen. You can also use the Back button on your browser.
Within the topics or weeks: The link on the topics/weeks goes directly to content and activities, and
links are usually the easiest way to view these items.
Blocks: By clicking on a block, you will immediately open that link.
Collapsing topic items: It may be easier to view content by only viewing one week/topic at a time.
You can do this by clicking the up arrow to the right of the topic/week number . To return to the full
listing, click the down arrow to right of the topic/week .
Course menu: You will probably see this on the left-hand side of the screen and you will be able to
click on any of the menu items to access different parts of your site.
YOUR UNIVERSITY WIDE PROFILE
―Profile‖ covers a summary of your profile, an area where you can edit your University wide profile,
forums posts within the unit site and University wide blogs.
You can choose what information you share about yourself.
ACCESSING YOUR USER PROFILE SETTINGS
To access your User Profile settings in Moodle click either
the hyperlinked name (that of the logged-in user) at the top right-hand corner of any course
homepage;
or
―Profile‖ in Administration.
This will take you to a summary of your user profile. To make any changes click the Edit profile tab.

Primary address - all posts/digests will be sent here

Email display
There are three ways to display email. Hide – no other Moodle participants can view the set email address Allow general – any Moodle visitor can view the set email address Allow site members only – only enrolled members of a Moodle site can view set email address
Email activated
Users can either enable or disable emails being sent to an address. If this is set to disabled, students will not be able to communicate with their lecturers and tutors.
How to change a profile picture
One way of identifying users within the Moodle environment is through their user profile picture. By default new users are provided with a placeholder image, but it is possible to change this to one of your own choice.
To do this:
1. Locate the Picture of box (directly below general)
2. Click the browse button to the right of new picture and select the intended profile image in the file upload box.
Interests - Tagging In Moodle
Tags are key words or terms relevant to a particular piece of information that can be used to categorise a range of media such as text, images and video. Tags allow students and Instructors to link to one another through shared interest keywords, such as ‗Education‘, ‗Philosophy‘ or ‗Olympics‘.#p#分页标题#e#
To add tags to a user profile: Go to user profile settings (see accessing your user profile settings above) and click the Edit Profile tab. At the bottom of this page locate the Interests text box and enter all applicable tags – be sure to separate each tag with a comma so that Moodle knows to separate them.
ADVANCED SETTINGS – SUBSCRIPTIONS
In Moodle students and instructors can change their forum subscription settings via user profile settings. By default user subscription fields are hidden but can be accessed by simply clicking the Show Advanced button at the top of the User Profile settings page. These advanced settings affect email alerts and tracking; as well as text editor, advanced web feature and screen reader.
The forums are defaulted to send a copy of forum posts to your email. You can change this when you post or reply to an entry, but you can also change your profile to not subscribe when you initially post

and you can change your profile to get no subscriptions or a daily digest. See the directions below for how to make these changes.
Email format
Users have the option of receiving email updates in plain text format or with html elements
Email digest type
For forum subscriptions users are given the option of three delivery modes: No digest (per-post): a separate email for every individual post made within a forum. Complete: a daily forum digest containing post subjects and content. Subject: a daily forum digest containing only post subjects.
Forum auto-subscribe
This setting lets the user decide if they want to be sent email copies of all new forum posts automatically once they themselves have posted to that forum.
Forum tracking
Enabling forum tracking means highlighting posts that have not yet been read, which should improve forum navigation.
Preferred Theme
A template has been customised for the University of Canberra. If you use this default template you will get the continued updates and minor glitches will be fixed.
Advanced Optional Settings
These are not covered in this Survival Guide. Be aware that if you put your contact details in here all students and staff at the University of Canberra logged on to Moodle can find your profile and read your contact details. Use this with caution.
OTHER PROFILE FUNCTIONALITY
Forum Posts – allow you to be able to see all your own posts within the unit Moodle site. Also allows the administrator of his/her unit site to view the posts of individual participants to gauge the participation of students within their courses.
Blog This is a personal communication tool- each user has their own Blog. Your blog is viewable to every one logged into Moodle at the University of Canberra
How to Post to a Blog Click on the Blog tab at the top of the User Profile page In the right-hand blog menu block of this page click add a new entry Enter a subject title, then the body of your blog entry in the main text box. Change my name as displayed by Moodle To change your First name or Preferred name, you can log in to OSIS (https://guard.canberra.edu.au/osis/real_logon.cfm ) and go to the Personal Details section.
There is a field called "Preferred Name" in which you can enter your preferred name. Once that's saved there, your name should change in Moodle within a few hours.
HOW DO I USE MOODLE COMMUNICATION TOOLS?
For most units, the communications tools used within Moodle are Forums (including Announcements or News Forum), Email and Chat. These notes will get you started with each of these tools. Other communication tools include: journals, instant messaging, wikis, blogs and tagging.
FORUMS (DISCUSSIONS) TOOL
Many of you have already used a discussion forum. Forums (Discussions or Bulletin Boards) is a place where messages can be posted for public display. This is the tool where you can post and read messages from staff and other students. This tool can be used to:
discuss general issues in a public forum
explore case studies and topics that are particularly important
post general messages and enquiries (of relevance to all the class) to the lecturer, and
organise related discussions, e.g. those related to assessment items.
Using the Moodle Forums tool you can be linked to a specific forum without needing to look at all forums. You can, however, see all forums in the course menu block.
The link(s) to your course discussion forum(s) will be easy to find. In the centre column of your Moodle course interface you will see something like this: Announcements Forum
This particular forum is a one-way announcement forum operated by your lecturer. Group forum
All forums, such as the one above can be accessed by clicking the link with the icon showing the talking torso.
Composing, Formatting, and Editing a Post
Compose To compose a message, click on the forum link and then click the Add a new discussion topic button as shown in the following graphic.

This brings up a similar editor where you can type in the message.
When you have finished, click on the button. You will have 30 minutes after that to change or delete what you have posted. Once the 30 minutes is up, only an instructor, tutor or other Moodle administrator can delete the message.
Reply When you click on a forum topic link, a list of messages will be shown. To read the message, click on the subject line. This will bring up the message and replies to it. To reply to the message, click the reply button for the message you are replying to.
Once you click on the Reply button, you may have to scroll down to see the reply box where you can type your answer. There is a mini editor to help you with your reply.#p#分页标题#e#
Forum messages also accept attachments, but remember that these attachments must be able to be read by your group. In many groups everyone will have Office software, so using Word and Excel format may be fine. In other groups, a variety of software may be in use so attachments should be generic. Generic files would include TXT and RTF files for word processing and CSV for spreadsheets. PDF formats may be read by anyone who has downloaded the free Acrobat Reader software.
To attach a document, write your message (with Compose or Reply) and then hit the Browse button in the bottom right of the window, and select your file to attach and click the open button.
When you have finished, click on the button. You will have 30 minutes after that to change or delete what you have posted. Once the 30 minutes is up, only an instructor, tutor or other Moodle administrator can delete the message.
Because forums are not usually read in real time, you will need to refresh your browser to see your reply.
Threaded and Unthreaded Discussion Displays
When you have clicked on a discussion posting, you‘ll see a drop-down menu at the top centre of the message area. It will probably be set like this: Displays flat with newest first. You may prefer to see messages in nested format. This means all replies to the original posts are displayed in an indented list. You can change the display by clicking on the drop-down menu:

Subscribing to and Tracking Forums
Moodle gives you the option to subscribe or not subscribe to forums unless your lecturer has made
subscription to the forum mandatory. When you subscribe to a forum, you can choose to receive an
email to notify you whenever someone posts to it. You can subscribe and choose to receive email
notification at the bottom of the reply box when it is open:
You can click on the blue ball with the question mark at the right for more information.
You can also subscribe/unsubscribe when you first click on the forum link. In the upper right-hand
corner, you are invited to search the forums or subscribe/unsubscribe to/from the forum; blue balls to
click on for more information are provided:
After you have opened it, click the Attach File button (the bottom of your window should look similar
to the one below) and then click the Post button.
You are able to change these settings in your profile.
Rating discussions
In some site, you may be able to rate discussions.
EMAIL
Your email address is in your profile area. This is the email address for all teaching sites and general
University communication. It is also here where you decide who can view your email. Moodle makes it
very simple to send private email to people in your group.
You can also email people by going to the Participants block and clicking on the person‘s name and
then his/her email address to email him/her. You may also select a number of people and then at the#p#分页标题#e#
bottom of the screen, choose With selected users… Add / send message.
Don‘t forget to use a meaningful subject line and remember to be courteous and not spam people with
your ideas. Sometimes it is preferable to use forums tool.

CHAT
Chat is a real time communication tool. Only a few staff members use this with students, but a number have it on the course site for student use. Many students find it a good way to communicate with other students, and it is much cheaper that using the chat function on mobile phones.
If you have pop-up blocking software on your computer, remember to disable this before trying to use the Chat tool.
Once you are in the chat room, you will be able to see who else is currently present. To find out about the person, click their picture and you will open a new window with their profile information.
To contribute to the chat, just type in the small white rectangle and hit they computer‘s Enter key. You may also send them a URL which will open up another browser with that page.

It may be possible to see the chat log from previous chat sessions.
HOW DO I USE MOODLE ASSESSMENT TOOLS
ASSIGNMENTS
If your instructor has posted an assignment on the course web page, the assignment will appear with an icon next to it that looks like this:
Step 1: To access the assignment, click on the name of the assignment (to the right of the above icon). You should then be taken to the main assignment page. Alternatively, you can click on the "Assignments" link underneath the Activities block of the course homepage and find the name of the assignment in the list that appears.
Step 2: On the assignment page, you will find:
a short description of the assignment
the day the assignment becomes available
the due date of the assignment
Step 3: If the lecturer has created a file for you to download as a part of the assignment, a file will be available below the due date. Click on the link to download the assignment. Open the file with the appropriate program suggested by your computer.
Responding to Assignments
Unless your instructor has specified otherwise, you can use any type of file to respond to an assignment (such as DOC (Word 2003 or earlier), RTF, PDF, etc.). Create your assignment in the appropriate format and be sure to save your changes. Note that the latest versions of Word, Word 2007 and Word 2010 save a file as DOCX and is not backwards compatible. It is probably best to save in Word 2003 for documents to lecturers or tutors (unless they specify Word 2007/10 format) and saving documents in Rich Text File (RTF) format is always safe if sharing a document with other students.
Uploading Assignments
Step 1: When you have finished creating your assignment on your computer, save the file. Then visit the assignment page again.
Step 2: Below the due date for the assignment is the area to upload a file. To upload your response, click the Browse button.#p#分页标题#e#
Step 3: Find your assignment and click on it to select your completed assignment from where it is located on your computer and then click the "Upload this file" button. Your response will be uploaded and its name will appear on the assignment page.
Step 4: Click the send for marking button when you are sure you don‘t want to re-visit this before the due date and you want marking to be allowed to begin.
(You may have the option of adding a Note to your instructor. (Perhaps a reminder that s/he has granted you an extension based on your doctor‘s certificate or people in your group or other). If so, click edit and write your message, then save.
How do I access my grades in Moodle?
Click on Grades in the Administration block on the left side of the Moodle screen. (Note: Not all Moodle sites will release grades to students, and some will not have this link.)

This will take you to the Grades module.
The table on this screen will list all the assignments and quizzes included in the course, the maximum score for each assignment, and the mark you have achieved for each assignment. The column on the right shows your cumulative mark out of all possible marks. Columns may be weighted to show total points or percentages.
Clicking on an assignment title (e.g., Assignment 1) will take you to that assignment. Clicking on the Stats link will show a pop-up summary of marks. Clicking on a mark (e.g. 90) will show a pop-up of that assignment‘s submission status and any feedback you may have received from your tutor.
QUIZ TOOL
As you enter into the Quiz tool, you will have some instructions to read. In most cases you are allowed only one attempt. The Moodle docs at the bottom of the screen is context based so might be very useful for you.
Some quizzes display all questions on one screen; others display questions one at time with the ability to re-visit or not to re-visit previous question.
Most quizzes have a limited time allocated. Make sure you submit before your time ends. You have three options for ending a quiz or quiz page.
Save without submitting - which, as its name says, saves the answers without submitting them
Submit page (optional) - which submits only a given quiz page
Submit all and finish - which saves the whole quiz
PROBLEMS
WHAT IF I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE E-RESERVE LINK?
The e-reserve link usually goes directly to a page for your unit located in the University of Canberra library site. This usually works really well, but there have been a few problems. The main one is trying to access this site from behind a firewall (usually from government departments). However, there are a few things you can try which may work.
The first to try is https://docutek.canberra.edu.au/courseindex.asp and then search for your unit or lecturer. If this doesn‘t work, try going directly to the library web page http://www.canberra.edu.au/library/ and click on the link E-reserve link from there.#p#分页标题#e#

You can access the Moodle docs help files available within each page of your LearnOnline (Moodle) site on the bottom left. This is probably the best resource as it is current and context specific.

Where do I go for Moodle help?
If you require more assistance than is available on this document or Moodle docs, it is important to identify the type of problem you are facing so that your query is directed to the most appropriate place.
If it is an Internet access problem, you should contact your ISP.
If it is an academic problem (e.g. questions about unit content, an assignment or the teaching material), you should contact your lecturer or tutor.

FINAL COMMENTS
Please remember that these printed notes are written only to assist you with getting started in using Moodle. The experience of many students around the world has been that once they have been using Moodle for a little while, they have very positive reactions to it. It can be a very useful tool in helping you to gain the most from your study so use it to its full potential.
LearnOnline (Moodle) is not a difficult program to use, but it can certainly be confusing in the beginning. Depending on the unit (subject) you are studying, Moodle can play a major or minor role. In flexible delivery, most lecturers would use Moodle to deliver materials (unit outlines, study guide or lecture materials) to students. Most lecturers will also use Moodle for important announcements. Some will do this through a text on the homepage, others through the Announcements Forum or email. Many lecturers expect students to contribute thoughtful (and often referenced) material to specific Forum topics or chat room times.
Spending some time learning to use the Moodle tools used by your lecturer can save you valuable time. Do you currently know how to search for particular topics on forum? Do you know how to copy and paste from Word to the chat room.

CHECKING BROWSER AND COMPUTER

Moodle will work well with most common browsers, including Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, provided they are set up correctly.

There are a few things you can do to ensure that Moodle works well with your browser.
Security Settings
Some browsers will interfere with Moodle if their security settings are set too high. If you find that Moodle is not operating correctly (e.g., clicking a button produces no result), try lowering your browser‘s security setting. Consult your browser‘s help function for directions on accessing and adjusting security settings.
Pop-up Blocker
