1. Introduction:引言
It is known that, fast food has appeared in our daily life for a long time. Nowadays, there are so many fast food can be found in the UK, for instances, KFC, Mcdonald’s, and so on. “The UK is the country most attached to fast food, closely followed by the United States, a survey has suggested”(bbc.co.uk, 2008). According to the survey of the BBC, UK is one of the country which most attached to fast food, closely followed by the Unite States. According to the research from BBC.CO.UK (2008), a large number of people in the UK have known that fast food is a factor which can lead to the raise levels of obesity. But, people cannot give up fast food for several reasons: 45% of people like the taste of fast food too much to give it up. In addition, 44% of these persons would be unable to give up their burgers, pizzas and chicken wings.
Fast food is a kind of food that is quick, convenient and not expensive. However It is usually make with cheaper elements such as high fat meat, sugar and fats, which are instead of nutritious foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. People think the foods include high in salt, sugar, fat or calories and low nutrient content (Harrison, 2007).
This research aims at whether fast food has benefit impact or drawback impact on international students’ daily life. Furthermore, it focuses on an effective way of fast food. In this study, questionnaire will be used to collect the data for this research because questionnaire is convenience to get information or data.#p#分页标题#e#
The research questions for this project are:
What attitudes do NTIC student have toward fast foods and is this affected by nationality ethnic age or gender?
2. Literature review:文献综述:
Fast food has become a very important role in students’ daily life. This paper will be divided into four parts. Firstly, the positive effect of fast food on university students as well as how it convenience for these university students will be considered. Secondly, the negative effects of fast food on high-education students will be criticized. Thirdly, Effects of fast food on students ' State of mind. The last part of this literature review will analyze the main aim of my research which is recommended an effective way to help these university students of NTIC avoid these problems.
Fast food as a famous food for a few decades because it is time saving, convenient, inexpensive and easy to buy them anywhere that sells food and snacks (Buzzle, 2011). The students who often buy fast food should know that buy fast food just need three to five minutes. What is more, it is convenient to eat in or take away, and it is good for students who has too much lesions or too busy to cooking. Lastly, fast food is not expensive. It is so popular because for under $ 5.00 you can get a filling meal. (CYWH Staff, 2009)
It is undeniable that there are some positive effect of fast food. However, it also has some drawbacks. Through the literature review, the disadvantage of fast food will be discussed. Some scientists argued that fast food such as hamburgers and fried chicken as heroin make people addictive (Hoebe, 2008). Thakore (2007) argued that junk foods were convenience and tasty, but there were some potential risk of eating them. First and the foremost, it is difficult to digest this kind of junk food. Also they are very spicy which means they had bad influence of people’s digestive system. Junk food as a breakfast should be the worst thing.
Mcmacken (2010) also stated that junk food does not have benefit for students’ health. On the contrary, they can be harmful to students’ body. There are not many nutritious in junk food. Most of them could cause a large number of problems. For example, sugary snacks or sugary drinks could destroy students’ teeth; food like hamburgers and chips contain high fat and calorie which make students get fat as well as damage their IQ.
In addition, Lee (2011) demonstrated that junk foods do not include in any advantageous to people’s body. Firstly, these food are filled with bad carbohydrates, fats and do not offer any helpful energy. In one word, junk food is not only cannot provide basic nutrients but also causing weakness in people’s body. Secondly, junk food would make people poor concentration because it contains amount of oil and fat. The last and the most important thing is that it could lead to heart diseases which include myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and atherosclerosis.#p#分页标题#e#
However, Wilk (2006) claimed that though junk food has so many disadvantages but it also make people’s life convenience and save time. Nowadays, more and more people in order to work and do not have enough time to cook at home or eating at restaurants. Junk food may be a good choice for people.
There is no something as a “bad” food. All foods can fit into a healthy meal plan. It is exactly that fast food is usually high fat, high calories, high cholesterol as well as sodium. However, less fast food is not going to cause some problems on your body. If someone eats too much fast food for a long period of time it can lead some health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease and too much fat.
Gap in the literature review. First, the study compares the fast food and traditional foods. However, NTIC students come from different countries; I can study the attitude of the people of different countries to choose fast food. Next, find out the influence and the impact of the fast food for change students.
CYWH Staff (2009) at Children’s Hospital Boston suggests young people try their best do not eat too much fast food. If they are having fast food more than once a week, try to make some healthy choices. So they give some suggestions:
Try your best do not choose fried chicken or chicken nuggets.
Have a good plan to control the benefit between fast food and nurture food.
Have a salad or soup with fast food together.
When you ordering a subway or sandwich, please choose lean meats like turkey or grilled chicken instead of fried food such as cheese.
If fruits and vegetable are available, try to add them into your meal. For instance, tomato and cucumber on sandwiches or burgers.
As has been discussed already, this literature review has analyzed reasons for choose fast food as well as the advantage and disadvantage effects of fast food on high education students. The aim of this research as I mentioned before is to find out how NTIC students attitude on fast food and how it can effect students daily life. As mentioned previously, the aim of this research to find out the attitude of people and compare the students’ attitude.
To compare fast food and traditional food.
To find out the influence and impact of fast food on NTIC students.
This research is quantitative positwist and deductive in style. In this research, the methodology will use a survey design with questionnaire to analyze NTIC students’ attitude in fast food and how it affects NTIC students’ daily life. This research has two month survey, following at this table:
Gillham (2000) described that when we choose to do something we should consider the benefit and losses. Firstly, questionnaire can save time and money. Respondents who do a questionnaire just cost three to five minutes. In addition, I finished my questionnaire via email. I do not need a lot of copies so I can save money. Secondly, respondents have less pressure for an immediate response. Because I sent my questionnaire via internet, so respondents can finish my questionnaire at their own place in their own time. If they like, they can double check something. It is respondents’ rights for freedom. Thirdly, respondents can complete questionnaire when they have enough time. Sometimes, maybe some students do not have a convenience time to finish the questionnaire. They may go to class or have a date so they do not have some time to finish the questionnaire. But, I can send it to some students to complete it when they have the time.#p#分页标题#e#
There are some drawbacks on questionnaire. It is exists some problems of the quality of the data. Some students maybe finish the questionnaire not very seriously so some data will be incorrect. Usually, some students like talk than write. In questionnaire, students just write some key words and no feeling, they cannot describe their feeling in depth and more details.
The questionnaires are finished by NTIC students. When they were studying in the library I asked them to do my questionnaires and gave some advices to me. Then I piloted my questionnaire and changed some questions because these questions were not relevant with my topic.
This research used the non-probability sampling technique. “Non-probability sampling provides a range of alternative techniques to select samples based on your subjective judgment.” (Saunders, Lewis & Thornhill, 2009).convenience sampling will be used, preferably probability, sampling should be used to improve generalize ability, this is not possible because a full sampling frame core listing of NTIC students is not available.
This sample is divided by two parts. The first part is nationality; different countries have different background and different shopping habits. The second part is gender; male and female have the different attitude to shopping in supermarket.
This sample is divided fifty students, twenty five males and twenty five females. The questionnaire is concluded four parts, which are personal information, cost, and attitude about junk food.
Some respondents who did the questionnaire maybe do not have more attention on the questionnaire or some students did not answer all questions. When I faced these problems I would explain to them. Because this research is aim at students, it is good for students. This research has many benefits for students shopping habits on fast food in the future. It is save time and money for students. Meanwhile, it is can change students’ shopping habit and help students’ get a better shopping way.
When a research is in progress, they may cause some harm to participants. At the same time, privacy and confidentiality are very important considerations when doing a research. Some participants not allowed discussing even share answers with others. Otherwise, the participants will be disqualifying.
To improve the convenience sampling as wide a range of nationalities and age, as well as both males and females will be selected.
4. Finding and discuss:查找和讨论:
This research is concern about twenty five men and twenty five women who learning at NTIC. This part divided into five graphs to illustrate the finding or result of this research.
Question1. Do you like fast food?
#p#分页标题#e#
The graph 1 shows the attitude of different nationality about fast food. As can be seen from this chart, there are just four students like fast food. However, there are nine, eight and seven students like fast in Algeria, Nigeria and Pakistani. The students who do not like fast food in China get a high figure, but there are a few students do not like fast food. Overall, most of Chinese do not want choose fast food, and the students who come from Middle East like fast food. At the same time, there are twenty eight students like fast food. In my opinion, there are some reasons leads to this trend. The main reason is the culture should be different. Most of Chinese choose traditional food because they have eaten them until now so the habit is difficult to change. On the contrary, because of the people who come from Middle East prefer
to eat fast food when they were young so although they know fast food maybe harmful to their body. Another reason is that a lot of students do not like clean their kitchen so they choose fast food.
Question2. How often do you buy fast food?你经常买快餐吗
This table shows students who learning at NTIC frequency of buying fast food. As can be seen from this pie chart, 16% of students choose fast food as their meal and 38% of students choose fast food instead of their meal. Nevertheless, just 14% of students do not choose fast food instead of their normal meal. The cause of this problem because the students who studying at NTIC do not have enough time to do some cooking. Sometimes, these students have so many classes in one day, they are too busy to eat at home, so they by some fast food at some coffee shops or KFC and so on. Another reason why they buy fast food as mention previously, it is easy to buy and most of students do not want to do cleaning.
Question3. How much money do you spend on fast food every month?每个月你花的快餐费用?
This graph shows the money that students spend on fast food every month. It can be seen from this chart that 13 students spend under £30, the students who spend £30 to £50 just 11 students. There are 14 students spend £50 to £80. In addition, there are only 12 students cost money over £80. Relevant with Chart 2, if you buy fast food frequently, you will spend more money on it. One of the most significant reasons is fast food can save more money. It is relevant to mention that CYWH Staff (2009) states that fast food is so popular because for under £5.00 you can get a filling meal.
Question4. What is the disadvantage of fast food?快餐的缺点?
The chart shows a few sets of data about the disadvantage of fast food in China, Algeria, Nigeria and Pakistan. The majority of respondent believed that eat more fast food will get fat, difficult digest, cannot offer the energy and others. For instance, more than 35 Chinese think that eat more fast food will get fat. However, other countries have different opinion about this factor especially Algeria. Only 10 Algerian are aware it. Although more than 20 Pakistani believed that fast food is difficult to digest, appropriate 15 Pakistani think that the fast food cannot offer energy. And less than 30 Chinese think that eat more fast food is not easy for digest as well. There are 20 Nigerian shows that the fast food cannot offer energy. At the same time, more than 30 Chinese to support the opinion which is provide by 20 Nigerian. The students who think fast food is bad for their body.#p#分页标题#e#
It is relevant to mention that there are some potential risks to eat fast food such as difficult to digest (Thakore, 2007). It is also relevant to mention that these food are filled with bad carbohydrates, fats and do not offer any helpful energy (Lee, 2011).
Question5. What is the advantage of fast food?
This graph shows a list of data about the attitude of the advantage of fast food on Chinese, Algerian, Nigerian and Pakistani. Some of respondents believed that it also has some benefit although fast food had some drawbacks. Fast food is fast, inexpensive, convenience, easy to buy, and most of students do not like cleaning. For example, the students who come from different countries but they do not like clean their kitchen so they choose fast food. As can be seen from this graph, a majority of international students choose fast food because it is easy to buy, inexpensive and convenience. However, most of students think it is fast but not always. Sometimes, they should as a queue and waiting for a long time.
It is relevant to mention that fast food saves time, convenience (Buzzle, 2011). After a busy day, when you return at home and feel hungry and tired, a pizza or a hamburger can be the best gift.
As a conclusion, this segmentation divided into five different charts to analysis the results. Firstly, different countries’ students has different attitude on fast food. Middle East students like fast food than Chinese. Secondly, this research also found some advantages and disadvantages on students who learning at NTIC.
5. Conclusion and recommendation:结论与建议
As mention previously, different researchers and authors have different viewpoint on how fast food affects students’ daily life. The purpose of this research was to find out if this phenomenon is suitable for foreign students who learning at Nottingham Trent International College. The research found that the number of students who come from Middle East like fast food is higher than who come from Asia. The difference of this finding because the different culture. And moreover, the research found this to be true as large of the students considered that fast food had bad influence on their daily life. However, they cannot give up fast food because its taste is good and it has some advantages such as save time, convenience and not expensive.
In addition, this research also found that the number of women do not like fast food is higher than men. After collect the data, there were 75% of women do not like eat fast food, and just 20% of men do not like fast food. The reason of this result is that they do not like get fat and most of girls like cooking. This research suggests that students should get effective methods to eat fast food. For example, when the students choose eat fast food can eat some fruit and vegetable or drink more water at the same time.#p#分页标题#e#
There are a few limitations to this research. Firstly, the culture is different and the eating habits should be different. So students come from different areas hold their own idea. For example, most of Middle East students cannot give up them because they like taste of fast food. Secondly, fast food has a lot of disadvantages so I cannot find some academic evidence to support some benefit of fast food. In addition, the sampling size was too narrow because I just do the research graduate diploma students. The findings may not be comfortable to all the students of NTIC. The graduate diploma students cannot instead of the whole students’ attitude.
In further research, the sampling size should be spread. It can include the different courses or different majors of students who study in NTIC, this phenomenon would give more lively and reliable results.
