3. MODULE DESCRIPTION
This module is an option module for a number of MA Programmes. This option will provide students with a substantive exploration of global migration from a sociological perspective, but also drawing on related disciplines. It is designed particularly to fit the MAs in Race & Ethnicity and Refugee Studies, offering students on those programmes a complementary and contextualising module. However, it would also be of interest to students on other MA programmes offered by the sociology and journalism departments, especially those on the International Politics and Human Rights programmes.
The module combines empirical and theoretical approaches, and investigates the different stages of the migration process from the perspective of different interest groups, including migrants, those left behind and those in receiving countries. We will explore policies and practices governing this phenomenon.
4. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Aims
• To explore migration as key feature of contemporary globalised society
• To consider some of the key theoretical perspectives on migration
• To consider the links between migration, and some of the key debates in sociology today e.g. racism, xenophobia, identity, culture, multiculturalism and social class #p#分页标题#e#
• To examine ways in which theorists of migration have contributed to contemporary policy debates around managing migration and integration
