This module, which operates across all the masters’ programmes, is based on the understanding that research will be conducted either through or about practices.
The module will introduce you to the question of research in the context of your practice. We will examine research approaches focusing on the relationship of theory to the work of practitioners. The module will also cover designing the research question, developing models for research, locating and interrogating sources and methodological analyses. Finally we will address the structuring of research outcomes and their presentation and dissemination.
14. Summary of teaching and learning methods
Teaching methods include
• lectures
• seminars
• IT demonstrations
• library research skills introduction
Learning activities include
• seminar presentations
• reading and private study
• development of a detailed proposal for either an academic or a professional project
Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes
This module will be directed by lectures which will provide the intellectual and skills framework to preface a series of workshops drawing on case studies from your selected pathway, but equipping you with research skills that are common to all of the disciplines. In seminars you will explore the nature of research as it relates to your area of interest and your self-initiated work.
This module focuses on developing the different facets of carrying out research at Masters level. The assessments help you to apply the relevant skills you will be developing throughout this module.

Summative Assessments
MA Fine Art, MA Design: Communication Design and Fashion & Textile Design pathways
The summative assessment will consist of a first assignment submission of a text (1500 words) worth 40% of the final module mark. This will be followed by the second submission (3000 words); a research proposal worth 60% of the final module mark. This part of the assessment is about critical awareness of the research process and constructive consideration of research methods. You will highlight some of the methods that would be used to carry it out, outline the sources and summarise the type of output to which it will lead. You will have the opportunity to view some examples of good practice in relation to research proposals (see table below).#p#分页标题#e#
