SUMMARY OF THE BOOK
This is a well thought out book which provides a conceptual understanding of crisis and its management, amply supported by real-life examples from the corporate sector. It also contains valuable suggestions on how corporations can minimize post-crisis financial losses or damage their reputation. It would also interest business executives, researchers and students of management. The corporate crisis that various companies face is not only complex but also varied, ranging from Natural disasters to inherent operational deficiencies. Whatever the reasons the consequences of a corporate crisis can be disastrous; this would result in the complete disruption of operations and leading to enormous business losses. Corporations the world over are therefore realizing the need to design structures in such a way thus enabling them not only to handle sudden crises effectively but also to anticipate and even prevent them from happening. It also discusses the possible proactive approaches that corporations can adopt towards both being prepared for crises and minimizing post-crises losses. It is divided into four parts, the book addresses the important causes and management of corporate crises. These include: Environment disaster management, corporate social Responsibility and ethics; and damage to reputation and market protection. Professor Shiva Ramu also alerts corporations to the possible onset of a crisis resulting from campaigns by activists over issues such as those related to the environment, workplace Ethics and fair trade practices. He also discusses a range of crises that corporations face in today's Business environment-from kidnapping and Hijacking to product boycotts and recalls piracy and cybercrime.#p#分页标题#e#
ATHOR'S THESIS AND CONCLUSIONS
The book has four parts and eleven chapters. Part one "environmental Management" embodies two chapters. Chapter one provides a general background of the environmental management stresses the role of activists campaigning against certain corporations and products. The author tries to indicate how some these efforts have led to command and control regulations and a new paradigm called "market based environmentalism". He also mentioned four strategies to deal with activists and government regulations: ecocentric management, environmental commitment, "first mover advantage" and green alliances. In Chapter two the author has given two broad types of Environmental disasters: Natural and Operational disasters. According to the Author, companies differ to such disasters and then again differ in their approach towards appropriate responses to such crises. In chapter three, two broad approaches have been used to analyze corporate social performance: first one is stakeholders' theory, which analyze it from stakeholders' perspective. Second one is corporate social responsibility and it is more appropriate approach according to the author's point of view. Finally the author has given an analysis of air crashes and due to which changes in the US laws have brought. In chapter four, corporate ethics, the author says that all the ethical decisions at corporate level are made to protect individual's moral and legal rights. Secondly, when there are no ethical programs at corporate level in the companies then the government intervenes and guides the management to bring such ethical programs in their companies. In chapter five, workplace issues have been discussed and renewed efforts have been made towards self regulation of such companies that have such work place issues and problems. At the same time many organizations could not able respond to the issue of sexual harassment in a timely fashion, In chapter six, which is about corporate image and reputation of the companies in corporate world, the author says that rumors play very important role in changing the overall image of the company. In chapter seven that is mainly about the boycotts author put various reasons of product boycotts. Then the author says that if companies recall their products voluntarily then its reputation will increases otherwise such a recall will damage the image of the company. In chapter eight, the author tells how the crises emerge due to piracy related issues software and telecom sector specifically. Chinese example has been discussed in detail along with all the related aspects of piracy and that it is responsible for most of the piracy of the goods of many world big companies. In part four and its ninth chapter, the author has given a picture regarding risks and risk management. Then an analysis is given regarding the change in nature of traditional risk attaches to the insurance companies. Second type of risk is also mentioned that is kidnappings and extortions. In chapter ten, author concludes that introduction of new technology and any change in market dynamics can lead to crises like situations. In the last chapter the author has concluded that four strategies can be used to handle crises in corporate world: first there is a critical factor of intelligence failure and if organizations could assess the signals it would be in a better position to handle any crises. Secondly if organizations can learn from initial failures then it will successfully avoid the crises otherwise it would certainly facing crises like situations in the future. Thirdly author says that managers are of core importance in crises like situation and if they are good and able then crises can be handled effectively. Lastly the marketing aspect is also of core importance in this regard to handle the crises.#p#分页标题#e#
MY CRITICAL ANALYSIS
This is a book written on the subject of nature, emergence and types of crises and then outlining the broad strategies to handle such crises in corporate world. It is a unique book due to its specific topic and comprehensive substantial analysis on various aspects of corporate crises. It is well written book with practical examples from the corporate world. I have found this book very informative and comprehensive covering many aspects and situations of corporate crises management subject. There are many positives in this but only few weaknesses or negative which I would like to highlight here. Firstly the author has very successfully elaborated the concepts which are very important in getting the overall understanding of the nature of crisis and its management. Secondly he rightly described social responsibility a relative and subjective term and he also the fact that social environmental values are different in different countries. He has also given types of crises and rightly explained different causes of crises that are individuals and collective mechanism. He has very effectively and justly explained how the corporate risks emerge and such risks are handled. Thirdly the book provides a thorough explanation of work place issues in the corporate world. Fourthly, I think this is a useful book because all the concepts were explained with practical examples and real corporate life situations. Fifthly, in my view this book also gives a perspective of the developing countries with ample examples from different countries and also covering its various situations. Sixthly, this book has easy and understandable text and explanation of ideas in that regard.
As for as the negatives of this book are concerned, there are few such point which are worth mentioning here. Firstly, in my view companies usually try to influence culture of third world countries and there is ethical intervention of the companies, so the book does not give such perspective to its audiences. Secondly, the book provide bit incomplete or inadequate framework to handle crises in corporate world. There has been a step-wise explanation of crises management in another book "Crises management for corporate self defence how to protect your organization in a crises" by Steven Albrecht, which gives better explanation of how to manage a crisis in corporate world. Fourthly it has provided two aspects crises construct: technology and market forces but the socio-cultural values of individuals have not been included, which should be included in this regard. Fifthly, while explaining the workplace issues the author could not justify it and not mentioned other important aspects. These aspects of such corporate ethics and workplace issues have been well explained by Gerald.W.Lewis in his book "The Organizational Crisis Management: the Human Factor". Sixthly, as for as handling of crisis in corporate world is concerned another book has also well explained it with the title "Seven Lessons in leading in crisis" by Bill George. In this book the author has provided a systematic framework for effectively handling the crisis better than in the book which is under reviewed.#p#分页标题#e#
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
After thoroughly studying and examining this book I finally conclude that the author has very effectively explained corporate responses to crises-some successful, some abject failures and the successful management of potentially disastrous situations through planned crisis Construct and risk management measures. In my view this book is having exhaustive coverage, balanced analysis and practical utility which would definitely be invaluable for CEOs of big companies, business students, financial risk managers, insurance professionals, and corporate planners. I will also suggest this book to business executives, researchers and students of management.
