Education reform in Japan, which is started from 1997, is claimed to be a way of strengthening national identity, traditional elements of Japanese culture, as well as supporting for the emperor system (Hood, 2001). Due to surrounding of suspicions for the achievement of the educational reform in Japan, whether the reform of education in Japan is designed for the purposes mentioned above is doubtable, along with the concern of the efficiency of the outcomes of the education reform in Japan. It is the purpose of this paper, which is to identify the purposes of education reforms, including the evaluation of the effectiveness of the education reform in Japan. Therefore, this paper will introduce the education systems of Japan both before http://www.ukthesis.org/and after education reform. There are two main contents of the education systems will be involved in part of education systems before and after education reform. They are the education structure of the system and core curriculums that available for the students. After that, this paper will individually discuss whether the education reforms in Japan are able to meet the purposes, which are strengthening national identify, traditional elements of Japanese culture and supporting for the emperor system. At last, this paper will also provide a brief evaluation about whether the education reforms in Japan have reached their purposes.
