You will need to choose an organisation and a small section or activity within it to study. (If this is a resit assignment, you should choose a different organisation from that which you chose for any previous summative assignment for this module). It will be helpful if you can negotiate access to some or all of the following: people who work in that part of the organisation, people who manage, policy statements, organisation charts, HRM practices, information on the technologies in use, administrative procedures, accounting and financial information, buildings, artefacts….
The broad task is for you to investigate and report on how control is typically exercised and experienced in the part of the organisation that you are studying. You will need to refer to the textbook and the further readings from the module for assistance in recognising and categorising control.
1. Identify and give specific examples, from your study of the organisation, of the main types of control being exercised: for example- administrative and bureaucratic, informational; technological (including ‘technique’), structural, cultural, social, self-control, Ashby and requisite variety, power plus any others that you have discovered in wider reading. Make sure to reference academic sources that relate to the different forms of control.
(This should be presented in the form of a table with references and brief descriptions, should take up no more than 300 words and is worth 30 marks out of 100).#p#分页标题#e#
2. Choose one of the forms of control that you have identified and analyse how that control process is managed and how it is experienced in their work by managers, by those whom they manage, or both. This experience may include forms of resistance and unexpected consequences. Include a clear description and explanation of the research method(s) that you used to obtain relevant data in your investigation. Again make sure to reference academic sources relevant to your analysis and choice of research methods (This should take up around 1200 words and is worth 70 marks out of 100)
Overall word limit: 1500 words maximum.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Your completed assignment must be submitted to the Undergraduate Office no later than 3 pm and an identical copy uploaded to DUO no later than midnight on 10 August 2012. Both copies must be submitted prior to the deadline otherwise a mark of zero will be awarded.
Assignments should be typed, using 1.5 spacing and an easy-to-read 12-point font. You should use double-sided printing, and ensure that assignments are securely bound. Written assignments must not exceed the word length indicated in the module handbook. Examiners will stop reading once this word limit has been reached. The word count should:
• include all the text, including title, preface, introduction, in-text citations, quotations, footnotes and any other items not specifically excluded below.
• exclude diagrams, tables, equations, executive summary, bibliography and appendices. However, note that it is not appropriate to use diagrams or tables merely as a way of circumventing the word limit. If a student uses a table as a means of presenting his/her own words, then this is included in the word count.
In a limited number of cases it may be appropriate to present, in an appendix, material which does not properly belong in the main body of the assessment but which some students wish to provide for the sake of completeness. Any appendices will not have a role in the assessment - the examiners are under no obligation to read appendices and they do not form part of the word count. Material that you wish to be assessed should always be included in the main body of the text.
Guidance on referencing can be found in the programme handbook and on DUO.
