The Initial Literature Review
Advice
This is a crucial part of the process of researching and writing a dissertation. The essential purpose of writing a literature review is to explore previous and current academic thinking surrounding your topic.As each individual Thesis is provided by UK thesis base http://www.ukthesis.org/
Dissertation is, by definition, a unique piece of work it is not possible to give advice that is both detailed and general. The object of the exercise is to present and discuss relevant academic ideas to provide a framework for your later discussion. What academic literature is relevant will, of course, vary from Dissertation to Dissertation. It is, therefore, impossible to give detailed advice about the content of your work in this document; however, the process is outlined below. It can be broadly split into three distinct phases:
• finding relevant books/ journal articles either in print or online;
• reading – and understanding – relevant books/ journal articles; and
• Reviewing (‘writing about’) relevant books/ journal articles.
Note that this initial literature review is dealing with academic theory; generally speaking, empirical/ sect oral/ industry data should not appear here.
As this is such a crucial part of the process, it is particularly important that you discuss your progress with your allocated supervisor regularly. You must provide him/ her with draft copies of your work and discuss areas for improvement at least once before handing-in the final copy.
Overall, your work should:
• include a brief introduction to set the context of the literature review, ie it should state the overall aims and objectives of the Dissertation;
• discuss a range of appropriate, relevant secondary research ie you must review appropriate academic books and articles
• Reference all sources both in the Thesis is provided by UK thesis base http://www.ukthesis.org/ and in a single list at the end of the document using Harvard referencing style.
Remember: a version of this work will be incorporated into the final 10,000-word dissertation. This can – and should – be modified from the version handed-in for the January assessment in the light of your supervisor’s comments (and the grade it receives).text
