表的内容目录
介绍 This title indicates that a feasibility study will be performed to see whether MFI’s are willing to help finance the Fortune Cooker so that people at the BoP(国际收支平衡表), so low-income households and unemployed females in Ethiopia, can make use of this product. Before laying down the background of this thesis proposal we must become fully aware of the meaning of the terms used in title of the thesis proposal in order to understand fully its content. A Feasibility Study(可行性研究)is a study undertaken to analyse various issues and elements of the project in order to reach optimum decisions about the viability and direction of the business venture. Core elements of a feasibility study includes; market analysis, technical analysis and a financial analysis(市场分析,技术分析和财务分析). Furthermore a feasibility study is undertaken to indentify the opportunities and threats in the internal and external environment of the new business venture and researches the potential resources needed to set up the business and ultimately looks at the prospects of success.#p#分页标题#e#
The Fortune Cooker(财富电磁炉) is a new, clean, convenient, user friendly, family power plant. It is built in a way that it uses solar energy to cook food, provide purification of water, dry wood and generate and store heat and electricity www.ukthesis.org(See section 2 for detailed information).
Microfinance Institutions (from here on referred to as MFI’s) are institutions that deal with microfinance. According to KIVA, Microfinance can be defined as the provision of financial services such as credit, savings, insurance and more to the poor or the low-income clients who traditionally are considered “non bankable” and therefore do not have access to typical banking services due to the absence of formal employment and/or formal mortgages. Microcredit is the provision of a small loan to the poor and is one of the microfinance activities that an MFI performs.
In this thesis the focus will be on Ethiopia as a market but this study will serve as a guide to introduce the Fortune Cooker elsewhere in the world. In specific people at the Base of the Pyramid are the target customers. As we look at the different world population groups in terms of economic activity the Base of the Pyramid (from here on referred to as BoP) or sometimes referred to as the Bottom of the Pyramid, refers to the largest but poorest socio-economic group in the world. According to Professor C.K. Prahalad four to five billion people live from 2 dollars or less a day. 2. Company ProfileThe Fortune Cooker is a new, clean, convenient, user friendly, family power plant. It is built in a way that it uses solar energy to cook food, provide purification of water, dry wood and generate and store heat and electricity. The Fortune Cooker company was created by Mr. Maarten Romijn who is the inventor of the product the Fortune Cooker. The Fortune Cooker was first tested in November 2003 in the Almeria area of Southern Spain. In early 2006 the product was tested in New Delhi/Gurgaon area of India. Since then changes in material usage have been incorporated in order to make the product function more effectively. For instance the aluminium mirrors have been replaced by solar glass mirrors to improve cooking performance and longevity. Underneath, an illustration is shown of the Fortune Cooker.2.1 Product StageThe Fortune Cooker concept is ready and the product has been tested and produced and updated several times. It is on the verge of moving through the development stage into the production phase and after that it will move into the introduction stage according to the Vernon’s product life cycle theory which believes that each product undergoes 5 stages namely; 1)introduction, 2)growth, 3)maturity, 4)saturation and 5) decline.2.2 Product CharacteristicsApproximately 100 Fortune Cookers will now be produced by Roteb BV. in Rotterdam. These are used for field testing purposes thereafter the production will be scaled up in order to supply the market. The materials used for the product are still debatable and are constantly upgraded to more efficient, cheap and environmental friendly materials. The company desires to use the C2C principle for the materials used for production. The principle Cradle to Cradle (from here on referred to as C2C) was introduced by Dr. William McDonough and Michael Braungart in 2002 when they published their book “Cradle to Cradle – Remaking the things we make”. The principle implies that when designers start to employ the intelligence of natural systems – with the effectiveness of recycling in a healthy way, the abundance of the sun's energy- they can create products, industrial systems, buildings, even regional plans that allow nature and business to fruitfully co-exist. This cradle to cradle principle indicates that we can use, recycle and reuse time and time again without the product losing any material quality as it is with the cradle-to- grave or down cycling methods. In this thesis the possibilities on producing the Fortune Cooker domestically in Ethiopia or other countries located in sunbelt continent Africa will be investigated and in relation the recruitment of low-income and/or unemployed females will be looked at in addition.2.3 Product MarketThe product has not been marketed yet because first the potential market needs to be identified. The target population is the rural and peripheral urban population or also known as the low-income households. In particular the product is suitable for use in the sunbelt countries that possible have a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) market. Underneath a selection is made of the group of countries located in the sunbelt continent Africa categorized on the number of known MFI’s active in that country (according to the field partner list of the International organization KIVA. But according to other sources Ethiopia has many active MFI’s. Furthermore many Dutch MFI’s and other organizations have good relations with Ethiopia due to the fact that it a politically stable country. Therefore for the feasibility study a Ethiopia will be investigated as potential market for the introduction of the Fortune Cooker.
3. ResearchIn the following section we will look at what the research objectives are. From there on we look at the main research question and the sub research questions that have been extracted from the main research question.3.1 Research GoalIn this thesis the focus lies on the MFI’s which indicates that the main goal of the feasibility study is;“To establish the attitudes, opinions and willingness of Ethiopian MFI’s on micro financing the Fortune Cooker .” 3.2 Research ObjectivesThe research objectives for writing this thesis are;· To provide the company with a list of MFI’s, located in Ethiopia, that are suitable for serving as a financing tool for low-income households and potential customers through micro credits to finance the product. · To recommend the Fortune Cooker company on marketing strategies that it can use to help sharpen their promotion and distribution of the product by using Ethiopian MFI’s knowledge of the rural area. Sub-research objectives are; · To look at the supply chain of the product in order to indentify environmental friendly ways and usage of materials by implementing the C2C principle in the production process through the use of a technical analysis. · To investigate the possibility of recruiting low-income and/or unemployed females to produce the Fortune Cooker in a low cost manner by producing it domestically. · To give an indication of possible financial success by using a financial analysis. 3.3 Research ScopeThe researcher will provide the company with the thesis report which includes the research data and the analysis of the research data. Based on the analysis a section in the report will be dedicated to recommendations and conclusions. Furthermore the report will include an implementation plan on how to sell the product through MFI’s. The limitations of this thesis is that no budget is made available for research and there is a time constraint related to the research period of 4 months. Therefore the choice is made to focus the research on only Ethiopia. Also there is no possibility for the researcher to visit Ethiopia so therefore the desk research will be conducted here and as for field research the reliance lies on the Dutch MFI’s co-operation during interviews. The focus will be put on the MFI topic. When looking at the Ishikawa Diagram (referring to section 5) some areas will need to be more discussed in detail and other will not depending on the importance and relevance of the sub-branches and on the knowledge of the researcher and the availability of other sources.3.4 Research QuestionsThe main research question for this thesis is;“Are Ethiopian MFI’s willing to help with the introduction of the Fortune Cooker by micro financing the Fortune Cooker?” The main research question is composed of the following sub-questions; 1. What is the country profile of Ethiopia? 2. What roles are the MFI’s willing to take on in introducing the Fortune Cooker in Ethiopia? 3. What possible promotion strategies should the Fortune Cooker use to promote, distribute the product? 4. What pricing for the Fortune Cooker do MFI’s suggest and what are their opinions on price fluctuations? 5. What is the potential sales forecast of the Fortune Cooker according to MFI’s? 6 .How is the use of intermediaries managed currently in Ethiopian and Dutch MFI’s? 7. Which MFI’s are willing to be suitable partners for micro financing the Fortune Cooker? 4. Theoretical Framework and MethodologyTheoretical framework and methodology are needed in the thesis writing process because they form a structured approach to collecting , processing and analyzing the necessary data that help answer the before mentioned research questions.4.1 Theoretical FrameworkThe theoretical framework is sometimes referred to as the conceptual framework. This framework will outline the different theories used in order to find the suitable answers to research questions stated in the above section. At least the following list of theories will be probably be used in the thesis;1. PESTLE Analysis 2. Porter’s 5 Forces 3. Product Life Cycle Theory 4. Push and Pull Strategy theory 5. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs 6. Diffusion of Innovation Theory 7. Distribution Channel Management Theory 8. Supply Chain Management Theories 9. C2C Principle Theory 10. Fortune at the BoP Theory 11. Globalization theory 12. Microfinance theory 4.2 Methodology 方法论One main research design will be used for the thesis report. This is the exploratory research design (which is a design to acquire basic knowledge, clarify relevant issues, reveal variables associated with a problem, reveal information needs) . The type of research is qualitative rather than quantitative. If there is enough time the researcher would also like to conduct descriptive research (Design to get insight into the research problem by describing the variables of interest. It is used for profiling, defining, segmenting, estimating, predicting, and examining associative relationships) in the form of a survey so then quantitative research will be used as well. In reference to the exploratory research the following instruments will be used;· Literature reviews · Case studies · In-depth interviews In reference to the possible descriptive research that might be conducting if there are no time constraints, a survey will be used and selected MFI’s will be the sample. To clarify what data is needed and which sources need to be consulted, the underneath table shows these items specifically for each research question.
5. Ishikawa Diagram 石川图In the Ishikawa diagram illustrated underneath, the causes and the effects of the current situation within the Fortune Cooker Company are highlighted. This helped to create the research questions and are the body of the research background.6. Gantt Chart 甘特图Underneath the Gantt chart for the research project is shown. This Gantt chart is created to write the thesis in an orderly fashion with a focus on structure and time planning. The red colour represents a deadline date, the orange colour represents a meeting with the school supervisor, the yellow colour represents distribution of the document to the supervisors, the green colour represents a meeting with the company supervisor, the blue colour represents other activities/events related to the thesis period.
