[60%] Final Examination

This will be a three-hour open book examination consisting Custom Thesis，Custom Dissertationof four essay questions. The exam will cover ALL the topics that were discussed during the semester and are primarily theoretical of nature. Only paper materials will be allowed in the exam.

The tutorials are designed to teach the students on how to write an essay for this unit. The essay must meet the academic writing standards. Students should be aware that the marking weights for the essay are as follows:

Theory 50%
The theoretical part of the essays serves like an introduction and usually surveys the literature in the research area. A good literature review quotes all the existing research articles in the area and students are advised to prepare a good list of reference before attending the exam.

One of the challenges with working with the list of reference is that it contains close to 200 research articles and students will have to recognise the research papers in their research interests. As a result, students need to familiarise themselves with these papers as from week one as learning about these papers couple of weeks before the exam can be very difficult. To that end, we have an open book exam for this course. The tutorials will prepare you to write this literature review section. Students are encouraged to search for academic publications outside what is discussed in the lecture as such inputs are highly regarded by the examiner. Students working towards a high distinction MUST quote papers the most recent publications.

The main purpose of a literature review is to identify a gap in the extant of the research literature. This will be the academic rationale for writing the essay. Students must also write about the practical rationale.

Methodology 30%

Most of the new theories discussed in this course have been empirically tested. Students are expected to know about these methods used for each topic. In some cases, these methodologies will have to be developed and applied in hypothetical environments. This section requires a good quantitative background and a formula sheet can be downloaded from the learning hub. You are strongly advised to bring one in the exam.

The methodology should address the gap identified in the literature review section. In other words, this section will develop theoretical answers to the problem identified.

Conclusion-Answer 20%
The last part of the essay is tohttp://www.ukthesis.org/Thesis_Tips/provide an answer to the question asked. Given that the student, identified a gap, and then bridge that gap, they must have a conclusion about their theoretical answer. A pass in this course requires an overall mark of 50 per cent AND at least 40% on the final examination.

University Plagiarism Statement
Plagiarism: the presentation of the work, idea or creation of another person as though it is your own. It is a form of cheating and is a very serious academic offence that may lead to expulsion from the University. Plagiarised material can be drawn from, and presented in, written, graphic and visual form, including electronic data, and oral presentations. Plagiarism occurs when the origin of the material used is not appropriately cited.

Examples of plagiarism include:
Copying sentences or paragraphs word-for-word from one or more sources, whether published or unpublished, which could include but is not limited to books, journals, reports, theses, websites, conference papers, course notes, etc. without proper citation; Closely paraphrasing sentences, paragraphs, ideas or themes without proper citation; Copying or submitting whole or parts of computer files without acknowledging their source; Copying a whole or any part of another student's work; and Submitting work as your own that someone else has done for you.

Enabling Plagiarism: the act of assisting or allowing another person to plagiarise or to copy your own work. Plagiarism can occur in oral and written presentations and is not acceptable. The use of another person’s work or ideas must be acknowledged. Failure to do so may result in charges of academic misconduct, which carry a range of penalties including cancellation of results and exclusion from the course. Please refer to University Regulation 6.1.1 on Student Discipline.

In this subject, given that the CALF exercise is a group work, you will need to pay special attention to plagiarism. Prior to the group meeting, you must write an essay on your own (your input). Then you will have to discuss your essay with the group (group input). I understand that the answers will converge towards a group essay but you will have to keep your unique characteristics. The combination of CALF and open book exam increases the probability of having similar answers. However, if two answers are exactly the same, you will be penalised for plagiarism and you will have receive a maximum of 30% for that essay. It is important for you to have distinct answers from your other group members. Further, rewriting any material (CALF and other published or unpublished materials) without proper referencing is another form of plagiarism and this is one of the reasons for why students fail in this course.

PLAGIARISM IS A SERIOUS OFFENCE IN THIS COURSE AND SUCH PRACTICES WILL LEAD TO FAILURE.

What will I need to access and read for this course?

Note that we DO NOT have a prescribed textbook for this course and you will need to read all the reading materials provided. We strongly recommend you to spend some time on the reading materials as they explain the slides in more details. In other words, if you find that the slides are not explicit, you MUST go through the reading materials.

• Self Help exercises
When writing these empirical papers, we usually perform some calculations in Excel and other quantitative softwares. You can access these calculations under the self hep exercise on the DLS. This is not examinable but it does help you to thoroughly understand the methodologies. These files show the practical side of the methodologies. As we are constrained by time during the semester, we will not cover them during our contact hours and you are advised to familiarise yourself with them in your own time.

It is important to regularly visit academic finance websites and these are usually finance conferences and other platforms. You may want to have a look at http://www.efmaefm.org for instance for a conference website and there are many more similar websites that you could look at. Other platforms will include www.ssrn.com and you will need to register with them to have free access to these downloads. A number of the reading materials will come from this particular website.
